Golden Globe Predictions

Sunday sees the first of the high profile award ceremonies that honour the best performances of the last year as The Golden Globe returns to the awards calendar after last year's writers strike that halted proceedings.
However with the string of awards that have been handed out in recent weeks there has been no runaway favourite to dominate the Globes, or indeed the Oscars, with films such as Milk, Slumdog Millionaire and Happy Go Lucky being just three to be honoured.
Despite this I'm going to put my money where my mouth is and predict who is going to win what on Sunday night.
The Best Motion Picture Drama category is one of the most competitive with all five movies of a very high and deserving caliber. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, The Reader, Revolutionary Road and Slumdog Millionaire have all been showered with praise but Slumdog Millionaire will come away with the prize.
Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy is a less fiercely fought category with Burn After Reading, Happy Go Lucky, In Bruges, Mamma Mia and Vicky Cristina Barcelona all going head to head. And there should be more British success in the form of Happy Go Lucky, which has had a good run of award success recently.
As for best Actor it's Sean Penn who has been lapping up the awards for his role in Milk and he is joined by Mickey Rourke, Leonardo DiCaprio, Frank Langella and Brad Pitt. Penn is the favourite to win but it would be nice to see Rourke take home the gong.
As for actress Sally Hawkins has been the runaway favourite, but she appears later. Although Anne Hathaway and Kristen Scott Thomas have had some success with their roles 2009 surely has to be the year for Kate Winslet.
Actor in a musical or comedy is a bit of a weak category but I think James France definitely deserves the gong for his turn as stoner in Pineapple Express.
Best actress in a musical or comedy goes to Sally Hawkins, I would stake my house on it if I had one.
I don't think that the Globes will rock the boat by giving Best Supporting Actor to anyone other than Heath Ledger for his great performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight. If Kate Winslet doesn't win Best Actress she may scoop Best Supporting Actress otherwise Penelope Cruz has had a good awards run of late.
I predict more British success for Danny Boyle in the Best Director category for his new movie Slumdog Millionaire.
Wall-E should walk away with Best Animated Film while Waltz with Bashir should win best foreign film, despite strong competition from the likes of Gommorah and The Baader Meinhof Complex.
List of predicted winners:
Best Motion Picture Drama: Slumdog Millionaire Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy: Happy Go Lucky Best Director: Danny Boyle Best Actor in a Drama: Sean Penn Best Actress in a Drama: Kate Winslet Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy: James Franco Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy: Sally Hawkins Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger Supporting Actress: Penelope Cruz Best Animation: Wall-E Best Foreign Film Waltz With Bashir
