Miami Vice

Miami Vice

Trailers have become big business in the movie industry they give audiences a sneak peak at what is going to be gracing the big screen over the coming months as well as notching up excitement over a particular release.

If you like me then there is nothing worse than missing the trailers during a trip to the cinema and everyone makes a mental note of they will go and see and what they will avoid like the plague.

However on the odd occasion the trailer can be ever so slightly misleading and we find ourselves sat watching movies that are totally rubbish.

So FemaleFirst takes a look at some of the trailers that promised a great movie experienced only to let us down and, in a couple of instances, produce total garbage.

1. Miami Vice

Michael Mann was the filmmaker behind the classic cop movie Heat, yes you all remember the classic scene where De Niro and Pacino come face to face in the coffee shop.

So when it was announced that he would be behind the big screen adaptation of cult TV show Miami Vice, a show he was executive producer on I might add, there was a ripple of excitement that went around Hollywood.

Everyone expected a dark, brooding movie with a great onscreen relationship between the two leads Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, who were taking on the roles of Crockett and Tubbs.

And when the trailer was released it looked like we were going to get exactly that a slick police drama that would turn into a successful franchise.

But how wrong we all were to say the least this movie was well below par with no chemistry between the two lead actors which was a major disappointment.

2. Tropic Thunder

When Tropic Thunder released it's cast list of Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr and Jack Black the spoof war movie looked set to be one of the funniest films of 2008.

But unfortunately we got more laughs from the trailer than we actually got for the movie, but hats off to Robert Downey Jr what a total legend!

From the middle of the film onwards the story does start to unravel and Stiller reverts to big set pieces rather than let the comedy and his talented cast carry the story.

and despite not being a fan of the actor at all Tom Cruise's appearance as the overweight and foul mouthed film producer Les Grossman is one of the best cameos of all time.

Despite this Tropic Thunder didn't deliver on its promise and it was one of the most disappointing movies of last year.

3. Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

Sixteen years after Return of the Jedi filmmaker George Lucas brought the fourth instalment of the Star Wars franchise to the big screen with The Phantom Menace.

It was one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year as the Star Wars fans came out in force to watch the movie.

The trailer promised excitement as we once again returned to Lucas' universe. And while the movie did deliver at the box office, grossing almost $924 million at the global box office, but it was not the critical hit that was expected.

While the lightsaber duel between Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul is one of the movie's highlights it failed to live up to everyone's expectations and while it was a good addition to the franchise it failed to come close to the movies that had gone before it.

4. Hancock

Everything that Will Smith has touched in the last few years has turned to box office gold so his new superhero movie Hancock looked set to be one of the big events of last summer.

The trailer promised a fast paced action movie, with Smith once again in great form, that would dominate the box office last summer.

However director Berg really did put all the best bits into the trailer as the movie was a massive disappointment.

For the opening half hour or so it looks promising an anti comic book movie where it's leading man is an alcoholic superhero living like a hobo and you are more likely to see him watching daytime telly than saving the world. But then the whole think implodes in spectacular fashion.

Peter Berg tries to be clever by looking at a superhero from another angle, which does work at the beginning, but he can't sustain this for the whole film reverting back to the traditional comic book show down, but all this happens too late in the day cramming the climax of the film into very little time making it appear cramped and rushed.

5. Ghost Rider

Superheroes have been big business at the box office in recent years with the likes of X-Men, Spiderman, Batman and Iron Man all making bucket loads of cash.

And in 2007 it was the turn of one of the lesser known characters Ghost Rider, with Oscar winner Nicolas Cage in the lead role.

Well I have to admit it was a movie that I was excited about seeing the last marvel character on the big screen. But it proved to be a massive disappointment with a really weak story, that painfully dragged, not to mention that god awful special effects. What a let down!
