Comic book blockbuster summer cintinues this week with the release of Hellboy II: The Golden Army, the sequel to the 2004 film Hellboy.

After an ancient truce existing between humankind and the invisible realm of the fantastic is broken, hell on Earth is ready to erupt.

A ruthless leader who treads the world above and the one below defies his bloodline and awakens an unstoppable army of creatures.

Now, it's up to the planet's toughest, roughest superhero to battle the merciless dictator and his marauders.

Director Guillermo del Toro, who brought us Pan's Labyrinth, is the master of the wierd and wonderful creatures so FemaleFirst looks at some of the out of this world characters appearing in Hellboy.

Abe Sapien

Working for Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD) Sapien is psychic, and has psychometric abilities and is able to transmit and receive electro-psychic information in the same way that cetaceans use sonar. Sapien has encyclopedic knowledge of the occult, and holds a paranormal expertise.

He spends much of his time reading four books simultaneously and attempting, unsuccessfully, to solve a Rubik's Cube, saying its been three decades and he has only completed two sides.

Prince Nuala

The son of Balor, King of the Underworld and brother to twin sister Princess Nuada. Prince Nuada disagreed with his father�s decision to call a truce between their world and the human world and is exiled.

He returns from exile to the kingdom of Bethmoora to reclaim the land and the freedom he believes has been taken from his people.

He plans to overthrow his father and seek his revenge with the humans once and for all to do this Nuada knows he will need the help of the good, the bad and the worst and attempts to resurrect and lead the Golden Army into war against the humans.

Mr Wink

A giant cave troll, whose size and figure resembles Hellboy. Mr Wink is Prince Nuada�s monstrous henchman and carries out Nuada�s vicious requests no matter how violent.

His gigantic club fist can be detached and used as a weapon since it can be shot out of his arm barrel and reeled back in on a chain.

His left arm has a gorilla-like appearance with three large fingers. His fist and extendable iron mace is quite the match for Hellboy and his right hand of doom which is made from concrete whilst Wink's fist is made from metal.

The Elemental

A 90 foot Tree God. A giant tree/flower beast that is the last of its kind made of leaves and vines. Beginning life in the film as a glowing green seed thrown at Hellboy during a fight that quickly grows to giant proportions to become an extraordinary creature that causes chaos in New York City.

Its head resembles a flower opening and closing so that the brain is mostly hidden and protected.
