Made on a budget of just $20 million the film was the biggest grossing picture of 1981 earning $384 million at the global box office.
The legend of Indiana Jones was sealed when it earned eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture but lost out to Chariots of Fire. It did win four awards including Best Sound, Best Film Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction-Set Decoration.
A sequel followed in 1984 and Temple of Doom was a prequel to Raider of the Lost Ark set in 1935. Jones is searching for three mystical stones that have been stolen from an Indian village.
During the search he stumbles across a dangerous cult that are using children as slaves.
Kate Capshaw, who played the role of Wilhelmina 'Willie' Scott, replaced Karen Allen as Jones' leading lady as well as introducing Jonathan Ke Quan as Short Round.
The film didn't do as well as Raider of the Lost Ark grossed just over $333 million and receiving mixed reviews. But it was the third biggest movie of the year behind Ghostbusters and Beverly Hills Cop.
A five year break followed before Indy graced the big screen for a third time with The Last Crusade.
The Holy Grail was nest on the agenda for the professor in 1989's The Last Crusade. Jones is forced to in search of the cup of Christ after his father Dr. Henry Jones Sr, played by Sean Connery, is kidnapped whilst pursuing his life long dream of finding the Grail.
Once again Indy faces the Nazi's, who are also searching for the Grail, as he retraces his father's steps in a bid to rescue him.
The Last Crusade did better at the box office than it's two predecessors grossing $474 million worldwide.
But after 1989 there was no news of a further Indiana Jones project but this memorable hero influenced a string of cinema character including Lara Croft, Ben Gates, a cryptologist featured in the 2004 film National Treasure and Rick O'Connell, an adventurer and treasure-hunter seen in the 1999 film The Mummy and The Mummy Returns.
Then to everyone's surprise it was announced that Ford would reprise his role of Indy with Lucas and Spielberg both on board for the project.
The newest Indiana Jones adventure begins in the desert Southwest in 1957, the height of the Cold War.
Indy and his sidekick Mac (Ray Winstone) have barely escaped a close scrape with nefarious Soviet agents on a remote airfield.
Now, Professor Jones has returned home to Marshall College only to find things have gone from bad to worse.
His close friend and dean of the college (Jim Broadbent) explains that Indy’s recent activities have made him the object of suspicion, and that the government has put pressure on the university to fire him.
On his way out of town, Indiana meets rebellious young Mutt (Shia LaBeouf), who carries both a grudge and a proposition for the adventurous archaeologist: If he’ll help Mutt on a mission with deeply personal stakes, Indy could very well make one of the most spectacular archaeological finds in history the Crystal Skull of Akator, a legendary object of fascination, superstition and fear.
The power of the Indian Jones has lead to a number of big named stars, including Cate Blanchett John Hurt and Karen Allen to sign up for the film.
So after an almost two decade wait it's time to done the fedora again as everyone's favourite action hero comes back to the big screen.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is released 22nd May.
