After nineteen years Indiana Jones is back facing new foes, gone are the Nazis replaced by the Russians, as well as being accompanied by a whole new set of sidekicks.
Here at FemaleFirst we look back over Indy's previous big screen adventures to see who have aided his quest and those who have stood in the way.
Raiders of the Lost Ark burst onto the big screen in 1981, with Harrison Ford hot off the heels of his Star Wars success.
Marion Ravenwood:played by Karen Allen Marion is a spirited tough young woman and former flame of Indy's. She is also the daughter of Abner Ravenwood, Indy's mentor, and she owned a bar in Nepal at the beginning of the movie.
Sallah: played by John Rhys-Davies is known as the best digger in Egypt and has been hired by the Nazis to locate the Ark. But as an old friend of Indy's he helps him locate the Ark to protect it from the Nazis.
Dr. Rene Belloq: archaeologist and Jones' rival played by Paul Freeman. He is working for the Nazis to find the Ark but intends to use the power for himself.
Major Toht: a Nazis interrogator he threatens to torture Marion to discover where she has hidden the headpiece of the Staff of Ra.
Three years after Raider Indiana Jones returned with another adventure in Temple of Doom, a prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark.
-Willie Scott: played by Kate Capshaw is an American club singer working in Shanghai at club Obi-Wan before getting caught up in Jones' adventure.
-Short Round: played by Jonathan Ke Quan Short Round is a child taxi driver who helps Indy escape from Lao Che in Shanghai and is the essential factor in freeing Indy from Mola Ram's psychic control.
-Mola Ram: is Temple of Doom's main villain played by Amrish Puri. A Thuggee high priest he kidnaps and enslaves children forced them to mine. He also used the art of mind control.
1989 saw the last Indiana Jones film before the nineteen year hiatus. The Last Crusade introduces Indiana's father who disappears during his lifetime guest for the Holy Grail.
-Professor Henry Jones: is introduced for the first time in Last of the Crusade. Played by Sean Connery he was more interested in looking for the Grail instead of raising his son.
-Dr. Marcus Brody: Denholm Elliott returned in Last Crusade, after making an appearance in Raiders of the Lost Ark, as Indy's bumbling colleague and helps Indy search for his father.
-Dr.Elsa Schneider: played by Alison Doody and was the film's female lead. She seduces both of the Jonses but is in league with the Nazis.
-Walter Donovan: played by Julian Glover and sends the Jonses in search of the Grail. However Donovan also works for the Nazis and is in the search for immortality.
2008 sees the return if this cinematic icon to the big screen in Kingdom of the Lost Skull.
-Mutt Williams played by Shia LaBeouf Mutt comes in search of Dr Jones in a bid to gain his help to find the Crystal Skull of Akator. The mission has personal significance for young Mutt as his mother is being held by the Russians, who also seek the skull.
-Marion Ravenwood: Karen Allen's character returns to the franchise for the first time since Raiders of the Lost Ark as a woman scorned and with a secret.
-Irina Spalko: an unrecognisable Cate Blanchett, with an impressive accent, who works for the Russian army and also wants to find the Crystal Skull to be able to use it's telepathic ability.
-George "Mac" McHale - Ray Winstone joins the franchise as Mac a friend of Indy's, they met during the Second World War. But who's side is he really on?
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is out now.
