Introducing Cannes 2008

This year the Cannes Film Festival celebrates it's sixty first festival and, since it's founding in 1939, it has become one of the most famous and prestigious film events on the calendar.

The festival, held in Cannes in the south of France, is one of the most high profile showcases of European movies and talent alongside the likes of Berlin and Venice.

It gives lesser known directors and actors the chance to premiere their work as well as welcoming the high profile movies and stars.

In recent years the intense media coverage that is given to the festival has attracted many A-List stars to France to premiere their Hollywood blockbuster on a more global stage.

This year the festival will showcase fifty seven full length features from a total of thirty one countries.

Every years the films many of the films on show compete for a series of awards including the prestigious Palme d'Or or Golden Palm.
