Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games

This week the world The Hunger Games fever is set to sweep the globe as the adaptation of the popular novels hits the big screen.

To celebrate the release of the movie, which brings together a great cast, we take a look at some of the great young actresses who have played movie heroines over the last few years.

- Jennifer Lawrence - The Hunger Games

And with The Hunger Games being released this week there is no other place to start than with Jennifer Lawrence.

The part of Katniss Everdeen is set to be the biggest role to date for the Oscar nominated actress.

Katniss is a self-less character who puts the welfare of her sister before her own. So when Prim's name is called in the reaping Katniss volunteers to take her place.

Once in the games Katniss must use her hunting skills as well as her stealth in order to survive.

The movie looks set to smash a few box office records according to the early hype surrounding the film - so we could be seeing the trilogy completed.

- Kristen Stewart - Twilight

Kristen Stewart saw her star rocket literally overnight when she took on the role of Bella Swan in Twilight back in 2008.

Four years later and 2012 sees the franchise come to a close and Stewart is one of the biggest young talents currently in Hollywood.

Bella is one of the most popular young heroines to have graced the screen in some time as she puts her love for Edward, who just so happens to be a vampire, before everything else.

So strong is their bond that the pair defied the odds and kept their relationship alive, overcoming many tests along the way.

At the end of Breaking Dawn - Part 1 Bella was seen struggling to give birth to their first child.

- Emma Watson - Harry Potter

Emma Watson may have been a little girl when she first took on the role of Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone back in 2011 but when the franchise came to a close last year she was a fully fledged movie star.

As the series went Hermione developed into a force to be reckoned with both with and without her magic and was a constant support for friends Harry and Ron.

And as the franchise drew to a close Hermione was one the front line when it came to defending Hogwarts, her friends and all that is good.

- Keira Knightley - Pirates of the Caribbean

The role of Elizabeth Swann turned Keira Knightley into a mega star as she teamed up with Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Elizabeth may have looked a prim and proper lady but she is a no nonsense gal who more than stands up for herself when facing adversity.

She has battled pirates, the English as well as the Kraken during her time on the high seas and completed her stint in the franchise as the Pirate King.

- Anna Paquin - X-Men

Marie or Rogue found herself as an outsider and on the move a lot when she discovered that she was 'different' to everyone else.

But it was only under the watchful eye of Professor X that she discovers how to live with her power and know that she is not alone.

And while she might be a chick who has the ability to take care of herself being a mutant is a lonely experience for Rouge - her power means that she cannot touch people.

By The Last Stand, the third movie in the X-Men series, Rogue decides to take the cure that has been developed so she can be with Bobby.

The Hunger Games is released 23rd March
