Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow

Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow

Cinema have produced some of the greatest and most iconic characters over the years that have entertained and thrilled us time after time.

But every so often a character comes along that has a truly great introduction to audiences - and we take a look at a few.

- Jack Sparrow - Pirates Of The Caribbean

In recent years one of the greatest character introductions belongs to Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean.

With the rousing music and Jack standing in front of the mast it looks like he is sailing into Port Royal on a grand ship... but when the shot pulls out you find he is in fact in a sinking dingy boat.

Not deterred by the sinking of his boat Jack swaggers into the dock and a cinematic icon had well and truly arrived.

This scene mixes the comedy as well as the eccentricity of this character as well as showing this character's ability to turn a problem into a moment of glory.

- Aragorn - The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Another great introduction in modern cinema came back in 2001 when The Fellowship of the Ring hit the big screen and the character Aragorn.

Aragorn/Strider is a character of mystery at the beginning of the film and he is sat in a dark corner smoking.

The shot tightens in his face and his eyes are lit up by the flame from the cigar - this is a great scene that gives away nothing about this character.

- Indiana Jones - Raiders of the Lost Ark

Raiders of the Lost Ark was released back in 1981 and was the first in the Indian Jones franchise.

And the introduction to the central character is simply fantastic as the scene puts you immediately into the centre of the action.

Jones is trying to make his way through an ancient Peruvian temple that is filled with booby traps to retrieve a golden idol.

He has to deal with poison darks and spiders before the cave starts to collapse when he removes the idol.

This opening sequence introduces Jones as a real adventurer and a risk taker and one of the best opening character scenes.

- Rick Blaine - Casablanca

Humphrey Bogart took on the iconic role of Rick Blaine back in 1942 and Casablanca is one of the greatest love stories of all time.

Blaine is the most famous and possibly most enduring character of Bogart's career and he also had a great introduction.

A man is standing at the bar and a check is placed in front of him. He signs his name and then the camera tilts up and bam is Rick.

- Hannibal Lecter - The Silence of the Lambs

Hannibal Lecter remains the greats onscreen performance from Anthony Hopkins and he went on to win the Best Actor Oscar for the role.

Lecter himself is up there when it comes to movie villains and he has a chilling and controlled introduction.

At the beginning of the movie Clarice is warned about Lecter before she meets him and as she walks past the cells to meet him the anticipation builds with every step.

When she moves in front of his cell Lecter is stood motionless waiting for her in what is an incredibly spine tingling scene.

- Darth Vader - A New Hope

Darth Vader is one of the great cinema villains of all time and from the moment that he appeared on the big screen in A New Hope he became an icon.

Darth Vader's forces have been in battle with a Rebel ship and there are bodies and carnage all around.

Out of the smoke dressed in black comes Vader who immediately begins to interrogate a Rebel Officer before killing him.

It's a menacing and powerful introduction and Darth Vader is one of the most enduring images of this film franchise.
