Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp

As Johnny Depp returns to our screens this week taking the lead in Michael Mann’s Public Enemies, film fans have voted Captain Jack Sparrow as their all time favourite Depp role.

In pole position was Depp’s interpretation of eccentric Pirates of the Caribbean favourite Captain Jack Sparrow with a swashbuckling 41 per cent of the vote.

Melting all our hearts in second place was Depp’s depiction of sweet centred Roux in the film adaptation of Chocolat (13 per cent) and proving that he is still sexy even with metal scissors for hands, Johnny’s innocent portrayal of Edward Scissorhands completed the top three (11 per cent).

‘Journalist Johnny’ came in fourth position (nine per cent) as his narration and characterisation of misfit Raoul Duke in the film Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas helped create a cult classic, whilst his ability to hunt ghosts in box office success Sleepy Hollow put constable Ichabod Crane in fifth (eight per cent).

Teaching us all about his inability to shave safely and his hidden talent for singing in sixth place was the demon barber Sweeney Todd in yet another of Depp’s pairings with director Tim Burton (six per cent).

Starring alongside gangster Al Pacino, Depp’s undercover detective role Donnie Brasco may have managed to infiltrate the mafia but could only make it to seventh in the poll (four per cent).

Pulling on our heartstrings in eighth place with one of his more caring characters was Johnny as protective big brother Gilbert Grape in early 90s film What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (three per cent).

With just two per cent Depp’s depiction of director Ed Wood seemed to be as popular as his character’s struggling movies, whilst his murky dealings as real life drug dealer George Jung  in Blow touched audiences in tenth place (one per cent).

The Top Ten Johnny Depp roles are as follows:

1.   Jack Sparrow, Pirates of the Caribbean 41%
