Matthew McConaughey

It's been a little bit quiet on the old movie front for Matthew McConaughey of late - but all that is about to change as this weeks kicks off an exciting time in his acting career.

Yes this week sees him return with his new movie Killer Joe, which is already be called the best performance of his career so far.

This is a role like never before for the actor as he teams up with director William Friedkin to bring the play by Tracy Letts to the big screen.

McConaughey takes on the role of Detective Joe Cooper, an enigmatic, dirty cop, who moonlights as a contract killer who befriends Chris (Emile Hirsch) who wants his mother killed so he can claim the life insurance to pay off his drug debts.

Unable to get his usual upfront retainer, Joe sets his sight on Chris’ innocent sister Dottie (Juno Temple) as collateral for the job.

But the simple agreement turns complicated when Dottie forms an unusual bond with Killer Joe and everything begins to unravel...

Killer Joe is a dark comedy that see McConaughey show off a very different side to himself as an actor and it is great to see.

But Killer Joe is not the only movie project that McConaughey will be starring in in 2012 as the actor has a very busy year ahead of him.

Up next for the actor is Magic Mike, which sees him team up with director Steven Soderbergh as well as Channing Tatum and Alex Pettyfer.

The movie is based on Tatum's experiences as a stripper before he became an actor and sees McConaughey take on the role of Dallas, a club owner and former stripper.

If you are not into the big budget blockbuster and superhero movies that will grace the big screen this summer then Magic Mike looks set to be a great alternative as it promises to be one of the funniest and saucy movies of the summer.

McConaughey switches comedy for drama with The Paperboy as he takes on the role of a reporter in Lee Daniels' latest offering.

The movie is based on the book of the same name by Pete Dexter and played at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.

The movie follows a reporter (McConaughey)who returns to his Florida hometown to investigate a case involving a death row inmate (John Cusack).

The movie boasts an all star cast as Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron and David Oyelowo line-up alongside McConaughey and Cusack.

And you couldn't get away from McConaughey movies at Cannes this year as Mud was another of his projects that played - a film that teams him up with Reese Witherspoon.

McConaughey plays a fugitive in the movie and befriends two teenage boys. With their help he tries to avoid the bounty hunters that are after him so he can reunite with the woman he loves.

The movie is directed and written by Jeff Nichols in what is his first movie since Take Shelter last year.

So if you are a big Matthew McConaughey fan then 2012 is set to be a treat for you as the movies starring the actor promise to come thick and fast.
