McG

McG returns to the big screen this week, well he doesn't but one of his movies does, as Terminator Salvation is finally here.

The movie comes six years after Rise of the Machines and it is the fourth movie in The Terminator franchise. Without Arnold Schwarzenegger it's Christian Bale who carries the movie as he takes on the role of John Connor.

Joseph McGinty Nichol grew up in Newport beach California and kicked off his career as a photographer, after graduating with a psychology degree.

After shooting a string of bands and filming music videos McG kicked off a career in television as he landed a job in the commercial side of the industry.

After working on adverts for the likes of Coca Cola and Gap his work caught the eye of Hollywood actress Drew Barrymore and he was approached to direct the big screen adaptation of Charlie's Angels.

And for his debut big budget movie McG found major success although the film didn't hit all the right notes with the critics it went on to gross over $200 million at the global box office.

Just three years later in 2003 he was back in the director's chair again as he re-teamed with Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu for the sequel Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle.

After a director's role on Stay Alive it was back to directing for McG as he took on We Are Marshall in 2006.

Set in 1970 the movie followed the aftermath of the plane crash that killed almost all of the Marshall University Thundering Herd football team and how they rebuilt the team and heal the community.

Despite starring Matthew McConaughey, Matthew Fox and David Strathairn the movie was not a success when it was released. McG hasn't directed a movie since working in television on the likes of Fastlane, The Mountain and The O.C.

This summer he make a big screen comeback with Terminator Salvation. Set in post-apocalyptic 2018, Christian Bale stars as John Connor, the man fated to lead the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators.

But the future Connor was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row.

Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet's operations, where they uncover the terrible secret behind the possible annihilation of mankind.

Despite some negative reviews the film remains one of the most highly anticipated movies of the summer and opened in America at number two at the box office.

There are already talks of a sequel in the pipeline with McG in the director's chair, but it will all depend on the success of Salvation.

His next project is expected to be a loose remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea for Walt Disney.
