Horror movies are big business at the box office and have produced hugely successful franchises over the years.

And this week A Nightmare on Elm Street is back on the big screen as a new age of the franchise gets underway.

Yes Robert Englund id gone and it's Jackie Earle Haley who 's taking on the role of horror icon Freddy Krueger.

So to celebrate the release of the movie we take a look at some of the most successful horror movie franchises that have graced the big screen.

1. Saw

Saw is a franchise that has swept the globe time after time and year after year since the first movie was releases back in 2004.

The movies moved the horror movie in a different direction as the torture element of the series gave birth to the 'torture porn' genre of movies.

Over the years horror franchises have always produced an icon and Jigsaw is the newest villain to be added to that list, the role taken on by Tobin Bell.

Despite not always striking a chord with the critics the movies have always been a box office success.

2. Scream

In 1996 Wes Craven brought horror film lovers another film franchise in the form of Scream, which has gone on to spawn two sequels.

The movie introduced us to Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell, who finds herself being chased by a psychopathic serial killer.

Ten years after the Scream 3 hit the big screen a new movie is on the way which sees David Arquette,
Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox are returning to their roles.

3. Friday The 13th

The first Friday The 13th movie hit the big screen back in 1980 as cinema go-ers were introduced to Jason Voorhees for the very first time.

Despite never being very popular with the critics the Friday The 13th movies have always proved popular at the box office.

In 2009 the movie was given a revamp as director Marcus Nispel re-booted the horror series after a string of cross-over movies with Freddy Krueger.

4. Halloween

The seventies and eighties gave birth to some of the best horror movies to ever grace the big screen, as well as some of it's most famous icon.

And in 1978 filmmaker John Carpenter brought us another one in the form of Halloween, and the legend of Michael Myers was born.

Throughout the eighties a string of Halloween movies made it to the big screen, enjoying varied amounts of success.

But in 2007, courtesy of Rob Zombie, the movie, like Friday The 13th before it was given a re-boot. The movie was similar to the original as Myers is still stalking Laurie Stode but the film also delved into Myers' psyche and childhood.

Just two years Zombie was back with Halloween II. which followed on from it's predecessor.

5. A Nightmare On Elm Street

Freddy Krueger exploded onto the big screen for the first time back in 1984, courtesy of director Wes Craven.

With Robert Englund in the central role Krueger has gone on to become one of horror movie's most famous villains starring in eight movies over the years.

In more recent years Freddy has teamed up with Friday The 13th villain Jason Voorhees in a bid to spice up both franchises.

But, like so many horror series before them Samuel Bayer is re-booting the A Nightmare On Elm Street series with Jackie Earle Haley in the role of Krueger.

Despite this movie only being released today Haley has revealed that he had signed on for three movies.
