Worst Movies of 2011: 8 - Rango

Don't get me wrong I am a big Johnny Depp fan so I was quite excited at the beginning of the year for the release of Rango - he has done some great voice work in the past.
But sadly Rango was another very disappointing animation movie to hit the big screen this year and it has made the number eight slot on our countdown of worst movies of 2011.
Alas the latest collaboration between Depp and Gore Verbinski was one of the first big turkeys of the year - it had so much promise in the trailer.
Rango is an ordinary chameleon who accidentally winds up in the town of Dirt, a lawless outpost in the Wild West in desperate need of a new sheriff.
The main problem with the movie is the soul crushingly slow pacing - the first half hour is the dullest opening to a movie of all time.
However if you do stick with the movie then the second half is a vast improvement, however I can totally appreciate if you have dozed off by this point.
Visually the movie is stunning, set in the Wild West, a sprawling desert - you have to give it credit for originality.
But the emotion of the movie and the connection to the characters just seems to get lost in the middle of the madness and mayhem.
Sure this not your run of the mill animation movie but it just lacks that spark, heart and connection to the audience - something which the likes of Toy Story 3 had in bucket loads last summer.
Despite all these flaws Depp is one form as Rango and it sounds like he really did have a ball recording this movie.
This movie had buckets of potential but the emotional resonance, which always brings an animation movie alive, sadly gets lost along the way.

Wait, is this the same Rango that Time Magazine's Richard Corliss named as one of his top 10 films of 2011? The same film just nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Animated Feature ... Read More
