The Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a new take on an old tale as Rupert Wyatt settles himself into the director's chair for the new movie.

Our fascination with the Planet of the Apes movies started way back in the sixties when Charlton Heston found himself marooned on a strange planet in the distant future.

The movie has gone on to become a bit of a classic. The story was re-made in 2001 as Tim Burton took up the challenge. Sadly the film was not met well.

But summer 2011 sees a whole new take on the beloved franchise as Oscar nominee James Franco leads an all star cast.

Franco stars alongside Tom Felton, Brian Cox, Freida Pinto and John Lithgow as a medical experiment goes wrong.

Set in present day San Francisco, the film is a reality-based cautionary tale, a science fiction/science fact blend, where man's own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.

Visual effects giants WETA Digital are on board the project - using groundbreaking technology developed for Avatar this time around the apes will not be played by costumed actors.

The Rise of the Planet of the Apes is released 12th August. Take a look behind the scenes at Cesar.
