Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Robert Downey Jr returns to the big screen this week as he reprises the role of super sleuth Sherlock Holmes in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

The movie reunites him Jude Law - once again taking on the role of Dr Watson, and Guy Ritchie who is back in the director's chair.

To celebrate the movie we take a look at some of the best English accents that have graced the big screen from none Brits - as Downey Jr drops his American twang this week.

- Robert Downey Jr

Seeing as we are already talking about Downey Jr we may as well continue as he adopts a very fine British accent for the role of Holmes.

This is the second time that Downey Jr has played this character - first taking to the screen in 2009.

Downey Jr has the well spoken accent of Holmes off to a tee, and it can't have been that bad as he picked up a Golden Globe for his performance first time round.

But the English accents should be something that Downey Jr is use to having tackled it back in 1992 in Chaplin, a movie that earnt him an Oscar nomination.

- Gwyneth Paltrow

One of the best fake English accents comes courtesy of Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow having tackled a sting of roles in her career.

Yes the actress has starred in Shakespeare In Love, Sliding Doors and Emma all of which required her to drop her American accent.

And in Shakespeare In Love she did that in fine style as her accent is flawless - you really would struggle to tell that she is not an English born actress.

Emma is one of my favourite roles for the actress and she showed, early in her career, that she could tackle and be successful in this most difficult art - because boy have there been some bad English accents over the years.

- Renee Zellweger

Renee Zellweger is another actress who has the English accent down to a tee with a whole host of roles that have required her to master it.

She is most famous for her role as Bridget Jones, she was Oscar nominated for her performance in the 2001 movie before reprising it three years later.

And she is set to tackle the English accent once again as she will be retuning for a third Bridget Jones movie next year.

However the movie where she really show off how comfortable she was with the English twang was in Miss Potter - and while everyone moaned that this role should have gone to a Brit actress you never would have known!!

- Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway has also taken on the challenge of the English accent when she played Jane Eyre in the Julian Jarrold directed movie Becoming Jane.

In the film she banters well with James McAvoy before falling in love with him and her accent really is very good.

She tackled a more northern twang earlier this year when One Day was adapted for the big screen.

- Cate Blanchett

Cate Blanchett may be an Aussie but you would never know it when you see her on the big screen as she seems to nail any kind of accent that she needs.

We are so use to seeing her with a great American accent but in 2007 she tackled the English accent when she starred alongside Judi Dench in Notes On A Scandal.

It's a pitch perfect, laid back sort of English accent that she nails from the opening scene to the closing credits - no wonder she was Oscar nominated for her performance!!

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows is released 16th December
