Skyfall

Skyfall

The UK box office has been booming this year as film fans have visited in their droves to catch all of the early releases.

This week saw Skyfall become the biggest grossing movie of all time at the UK box office so we have taken a look at the movies that have also done well here.

1. Skyfall (£93.7 million)

It has taken Skyfall, the twenty third James Bond movie, just six weeks to amass an eye watering £93.7 million here in the UK and topple Avatar as this biggest grossing movie of all time in this country.

The movie marked the third outing for Daniel Craig as 007 while Sam Mendes tackled directing a Bond movie for the very first time.

Skyfall has dominated the global box office and has so far grossed in excess of $871 million - making it the biggest Bond movie of all time.

The latest Bond movie has been breaking box office records left right and centre and it is going to take one hell of a movie to budge it from the #1 spot on the all time UK box office list.

2. Avatar (£93.4 million)

It was back in 2009 that James Cameron stunned the world with the release of Avatar as he took motion capture performances to another level.

To say that the movie was a box office success was a bit of an understatement as it grossed over $2 billion worldwide to become the biggest grossing movie of all time.

It took the movie just nineteen days to break the sacred $1 billion barrier and by the end of its run it has grossed £93.4 million in the UK alone.

Avatar toppled Titanic from the top of UK all time list comfortably surpassing the £79.9 million target.

3. Titanic (£79.9 million)

Titanic became the biggest grossing movie at the UK box office back in 1998 and stayed there for twelve years.

The movie was another James Cameron triumph as it stormed to the $1 billion barrier.

During it's re-release Titanic became on the second movie to take in excess of $2 billion.

4. Toy Story 3 (£73.4 million)

The only animation film to feature in the top ten biggest grossing movies at the UK box office is Toy Story 3.

Released back in 2010 the movie if the most successful Pixar project ever was the third, and supposedly final, instalment of the Toy Story franchise.

And it seems that they saved the best for last as Toy Story 3 is the best Pixar movie to ever grace the big screen.

It is the only animation movie to break $1 billion at the global box office and it took in excess of £73.4 million in the UK alone.

5. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 (£73.09 million)

We round off our look at the top five biggest movies of all time at UK box office with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2, which brought the Harry Potter franchise to an epic close last summer.

Deathly Hallows - Part 2 was the most successful movie in the franchise and was the first one to break $1 billion at the global box office.

The movie still had one of the biggest opening weekends in the UK of all time and had taken over £73 million in the UK by the end of it's run.

The rest of the top ten is made up of Mamma Mia!, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.
