Steve Carell

Steve Carell returns to the big screen this week with Shawn Levy's latest comedy Date Night, which sees him team up with funny woman Tina Fey.

Date Night is Carell's first movie since Get Smart back in 2008 and is set in New York City, as case of mistaken identity turns a bored married couple's attempt at a glamorous and romantic evening into something more thrilling and dangerous.

So to celebrate the release of the movie we took a look at some of Carell's best performances.

- Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy

Anchorman was released back in 2004, yes it really was six years ago, and it was a movie that really made people sit up and take note of Carell, it didn't do Will Ferrell too much arm either.

Ron Burgundy is San Diego's top rated newsman in the male dominated broadcasting of the 1970's, but that's all about to change when a new female employee with ambition to burn arrives in his office.

Carell took on the role of Brick Tamland a  mentally-challenged weatherman for Channel Four News who has a habit of stating unrequested or irrelevant information.

The movie was well received by the critics when it was released. It went on to make over $90 million at the global box office, easily making back it's $26 million budget.

Since then the movie has gone on to gain a cult following, and is widely regarded as one of Ferrell's best movies. There have been talks of a sequel but they have, for now, been put on hold.

- The Office

2005 saw the actor move into TV as he took on the role of Michael Scott in the American version of BBC's hit show The Office.

The series follows the everyday lives of office employees in the Scranton, Pennsylvania, branch of the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company.

For his performance in the show, which was greatly helped by his role in The 40 Year Old Virgin, the actor has won a Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild, as well as notching up a string of nominations year after year.

The show is currently in it's sixth season, as well as producing a string of webisodes.

- The 40 Year Old Virgin

However it was the 2005 movie The 40 Year Old Virgin that really saw Carell's star being to rise as he took on the role of Andy Stitzer.

Forty-year-old Andy Stitzer has done quite a few things in his life. He's got a cushy job stamping invoices at an electronics superstore, a nice apartment with a proud collection of action figures and comic books, good friends, a nice attitude.

But there's just one little thing he hasn't quite gotten around to doing yet--something most people have done by this age. Done a lot. Andy's never, ever, ever had sex, not even by accident.

So is that such a big deal? Well, for Andy's buddies at the store, it sure is. Although they think he's a bit of an oddball, there's certainly a planetful of stranger (and homelier) guys who've at least had one go at having a go.

They consider it their duty to help Andy out of his dire situation and go to great lengths to help him. But nothing proves effective enough to lure their friend out of lifelong chastity until he meets Trish, a 40-year-old mother of three.

Andy's friends are psyched by the possibility that "it" may finally happen--until they hear that Andy and Trish have begun their relationship based on a mutual no-sex policy.

The movie was a huge critical hit upon release and went on to gross over $177 million at the global box office, it was only made for $26 million.

But the role shot Carell to super stardom as he became one of Hollywood's best comedy talents.

- Little Miss Sunshine

He moved into a supporting role in 2006 when he appeared alongside Toni Collette, Greg Kinnear, Abigail Breslin, Paul Dano and Alan Arkin in comedy Little Miss Sunshine.

The Hoover family treks from Albuquerque to the Little Miss Sunshine pageant in Redondo Beach, California, to fulfil the deepest wish of 7-year-old Olive, an ordinary little girl with big dreams.

Along the way the family must deal with crushed dreams, heartbreaks, and a broken-down VW bus, leading up to the surreal Little Miss Sunshine competition itself.

On their travels through this bizarre landscape, the Hoovers learn to trust and support each other along the path of life, no matter what the challenge.

Despite it's limited released the movie went on to be Oscar nominated and the cast were nominated for a string of ensemble cast awards.

Date Night is released 21st April
