Worst Movies of 2011 - 5 - Sucker Punch

Sucker Punch was another movie that graced the big screen at the beginning of the year -and the trailer promised a very stylish looking and exciting movie.

Sadly it seems that all the best bits were but in the trailer as there are no worlds for how bad this movie is and it is in at number five on the countdown of our worst movies of 2011.

A young girl is institutionalised by her abusive stepfather. Retreating to an alternative reality as a coping strategy, she envisions a plan which will help her escape from the mental facility.

The story is rather derivative from the very start but by the time the closing credits roll it has just collapsed into a senseless mess - and you are left wondering what?

It seems that director Zack Snyder has spent so time building his digital world - which was the highlight - that he seems to have forgotten that a successful movie needs a storyline and interesting characters.

Gun toting hotties is about as deep as our characters get, which is a shame because I think right at the heart of this film there is quite an interesting idea.

It's not often that we see a female lead action movie and the chance to really make a mark has been desperately let slip by.

Snyder has brought together a very talented cast as Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish and Jenna Malone and they really are left with little to do except run around in leather clad costumes - which is such a shame as they really are a group of very exciting young actresses.

This is just a shallow piece of cinema that is exploitative rather than a gender defining action movie that it really could have been - not to mention it could have kicked off a successful franchise.

It's just a mess of a movie that has no real story or direction and it really should be avoided at all costs!!
