Superhero Summer: Hellboy

2 months ago 04th Mar 11:04

Unlike the very serious award winning cinema of the past few months the rapidly approaching summer brings with it the return of the multi-million dollar blockbusters that dominated the box office in 2007.

This year the big screen is set to be ruled by the superhero with Hellboy, Ironman, Batman and The Hulk all being released.

With all these releases as well as the likes of The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe: Prince Caspian, Speed Racer and Indy 4 this is one of the most highly anticipated summer's of all time.

Here at FemaleFirst we took a closer look at the character that will be crashing into cinemas nationwide this Superhero Summer.

With a budget of $80 million director Guillermo del Toro and leading man Ron Pearlman return with Hellboy II: The Golden Army.

With a signature blend of action, humour and character-based spectacle, the saga of the world's toughest, kitten-loving hero from Hell continues to unfold in "Hellboy II: The Golden Army."

Bigger muscle, badder weapons and more ungodly villains arrive in an epic vision of imagination from Oscar®-nominated director Guillermo del Toro ("Pan's Labyrinth," "Hellboy").

After an ancient truce existing between humankind and the invisible realm of the fantastic is broken, hell on Earth is ready to erupt.

A ruthless leader who treads the world above and the one below defies his bloodline and awakens an unstoppable army of creatures.

Now, it's up to the planet's toughest, roughest superhero to battle the merciless dictator and his marauders. He may be red. He may be horned. He may be misunderstood.

But when you need the job done right, it's time to call in Hellboy (Ron Perlman).

Along with his expanding team in the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Development--pyrokinetic girlfriend Liz (Selma Blair), aquatic empath Abe (Doug Jones) and protoplasmic mystic Johann--the BPRD (the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defence) will travel between the surface strata and the unseen magical one, where creatures of fantasy become corporeal.

And Hellboy, a creature of two worlds who's accepted by neither, must choose between the life he knows and an unknown destiny that beckons him.

The 2004 release of Hellboy grossed under $100 million at the global box office, which doesn't usually warrant a sequel however the film's performance on DVD convinced the studios to give the wise cracking, red skinned, demonic hero a second chance on the big screen.

After del Toro' success with Pan's Labyrinth, which left the critics speechless, the director has been given confidence to create similar characters that will take Hellboy to new heights and leads it away from the 'comic book movie' tag.

As well as action and visuals the film also looks at the relationship between Hellboy and girlfriend Liz as it is put to the test, Abe may also find a little romance!

Hellboy is released 22nd August
