Susan Sarandon has had a career that has spanned almost forty years appearing in some of cinema's best movies including Thelma and Louise and Dead Man Walking, a role which won her a Best Actress Oscar.

But with Speed Racer she has moved into the blockbuster movie as Speed's mother and will next be seen in Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones.

Why were you keen to do Speed Racer?

The Matrix was such a huge film in my family so I thought that my kids would think that I was really cool if I did this movie.

You joked that you did Speed Racer so your kids would think you were cool. Surely they already thought that because of the great films you’ve made?

They haven’t seen most of my movies. They are going to get such a surprise when they sit down one day and start looking. For the longest time my daughter thought I worked in a trailer! They didn’t have the faintest idea. T

hen she got into an argument with somebody when she was about six they said I was a movie star and she said I was an actor. I thought that was really interesting that she fought somebody over the difference between actor and movie star. I don’t know if they think I’m cool. For them I’m just their mom.

I like the fact that they can talk to me about things, so that probably does qualify as some coolness. I don’t get all their secrets nor do I tell them mine but we have conversations about music and drugs and what’s happening with them.

In that sense I am certainly unlike how my mother was even when she was eight months pregnant she denied she was having sex with my father. Things have definitely changed and I had my kids so late that I had probably a different attitude about it. I knew who I was by that time. In the beginning they didn’t want to share me with people.
