The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight

On 25 July 2008 Batman returns in the second movie with Christian Bales in the lead role and Christopher Nolan as director.

Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Gary Oldman are all back to reprise their roles of Alfred Pennyworth, Lucius Fox and Lieutenant Gordan.

The most notable of the new recruits is Heath Ledger who's got the mammoth task of filling those very big shoes left by Jack Nicholson as

Other additions include Maggie Gyllenhaal, she takes over from Katie Holmes who has apparently had a conflict in shooting schedules so cannot appear, in the role of Rachel Dawes and Aaron Eckhart.

It has been heavily hinted that the Dark Knight will tell the origin of Heath Ledger's Joker who was already terrorising the street of Gotham at the end of Batman Begins.

The Dark Knight is set two years after Batman Begins and Batman and Gordan have teamed up with District Attorney Harvey Dent to help catch the Joker who's crimes are becoming more deadly.

As well as this Batman aka Bruce Wayne and Gordan are trying to clean up the streets of Gotham by trying to re-capture those freed at the end of the first movie, this includes Crane/Scarcrow despite Cillian Murphy not being named on the cast list.

Prior to the casting of Heath Ledger, a surprise choice, Paul Bettany, Adrien Brody, Robin Williams and Lachy Hulme had all publicly announced that they were interested in the role of the Joker.

Actors Liev Schreiber, Josh Lucas and Ryan Phillippe had also expressed interest in the role of Harvey Dent.

The movie which is still being shot has been filmed in Chicargo and London with rumours that they will go on to film in Los Angeles, Baltimore and Hong Kong.

Starring: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Michael Caine, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman and Maggie Gyllenhaal

The Dark Knight is released 25th July
