The Young Victoria

The Young Victoria

The Young Victoria is just the latest movie about a British monarch to grace the big screen, after the likes of Elizabeth and The Other Boleyn Girl.

But many people's perception of Queen Victoria is this old woman who spent the end of her life in grief and dressed in black after the death of her husband Albert.

But this movie aims to change our perception of the monarch by looking at the early years of her reign from her lonely childhood, breaking from her mother's control to her relationship with Albert.

While we quite of see s queen who missed her husband after his death The Young Victoria follows the early days of their relationship, her proposal to him and their happy union that produced nine children.

She reigned for over sixty three years, longer than any other British monarch to date.

The role of Queen Victoria has fallen to British actress Emily Blunt, in her first major lead role, with fellow Brit Rupert Friend in the role of Albert.

But this is not the first time that Victoria has appeared on the big screen, her most famous portrayal coming courtesy of Judi Dench in Mrs Brown.

Released in 1997 the film follows the queen after the death of her husband who, while visiting Balmoral Castle she meets Mr Brown. Brown is a member of her household staff who thinks the time has come for her to start living a normal life.

He soon gains the Queen's favour and friendship and his authority and status in the household are soon on the rise. This creates concerns among the Queen's many advisers who see their own influence diminishing and the Queen's reputation being tarnished.

The movie, and in particular the performances from Judi Dench and Billy Connelly, were a critical hit and Dench went on to be Oscar nominated for her role, picking up a Bafta, Golden Globe along the way.

The couple's relationship was also the subject of a television miniseries in 2001 starring Victoria Hamilton and Jonathan Firth.

And British monarchs are a popular choice for film topics with Elizabeth I the most recent queen to make it onto the big screen.

Starring Cate Blachett in the role of Elizabeth her story has spanned two movies and has enjoyed box office success. Dench also played her in Shakespeare in Love, albeit a very small role.

Helen Mirren has also stepped into this genre of film when she took on the role of Elizabeth II in The Queen, a role for which she won an Oscar. She also took on the role of Elizabeth I for a two part TV series alongside Jeremy Irons.

The Young Victoria is released 6th March.
