The crime genre has been one that has been thrilling cinema audiences from decades with their exciting plots and interesting characters.

We take a look at some of the best crime movies to grace the big screen from the likes of the hard hitting Scarface to the comedy Ocean's Eleven.

1. The Godfather (1972)

Vito Corleone’s youngest son has just arrived back from WWII and has no desire to be a part of the family business.

A rival of the Corleone family wants to start a drug trafficking and dealing business in New York and needs the help of Don to pursue it.

But Don is evidently against the use of narcotics and refuses to help, which comes at a violent price and eventually leads to Michael, having never wanted to be a part of the family business, becoming the head of it.

2. The Fast and the Furious (2001)

Dominic Toretto, an L.A street racer and his gang are under investigation by the LAPD for numerous truck robberies containing millions of dollars worth of electronics.

An LAPD officer, Brian O’Connor goes undercover and joins Toretto’s racing gang to prove him guilty.

However, O’Connor falls for Toretto’s younger sister, Mia, and questions where his loyalty lies as he finds himself crossing over to the other side.

3. Oceans Eleven (2001)

Danny Ocean has just been released on parole and already has his next heist in mind; to rob three Las Vegas casinos all owned by the same person, Terry Benedict.

Ocean gathers a team of trained professionals from all of the country to help him with his elaborate plan and take the ultimate revenge on the man who stole his ex-wife, Tess.

4. Public Enemies (2009)

John Dillinger is a notorious bank robber who loves his ‘job’ but the FBI is less than keen on his antics.

Melvin Purvis is the FBI agent in charge of finding and arresting Dillinger and he soon discovers that if he is to do so he’ll need to use street tactics and blackmail.

The FBI is eventually led to Dillinger’s whereabouts by the betrayal of one of his own.

5. The Devils Own (1997)

Frankie McGuire, a top IRA agent from Northern Ireland, is sent to New York City to purchase weapons.

Frankie’s arranged accommodation is with Tom O’Meara, an NYPD cop and his family, who are completely unaware of Frankie’s true identity and why he is there.

Frankie unexpectedly becomes friends with Tom and has to choose between a life of murder or life of peace.

6. Dead Man Walking (1995) (SMC)

Matthew Poncelet, a murderer on death row, sends letters to Sister Helen Prejean’s convent.

Prejean travels to the prison where Poncelet is being held and becomes his spiritual guide, helping him come to terms with the horrific crimes that he has committed.

The friendship grows so deep that she’s the hand on Poncelet’s shoulder as he walks down death row to his demise by lethal injection.

7. Bonnie and Clyde (1967)

Bonnie Parker is a bored, small town girl that wants excitement in her life, which comes to her in the form of Clyde Barrow, a bank robber.

The pair quickly fall in love with each other and their small heists rapidly turn in to full blown, violent bank robberies, resulting in the couple’s fatal end.

8. Reservoir Dogs (1992)

Joe Cabot wants to carry out a diamond robbery and hires 6 strangers to do the job. He gives them all fake names, a different colour, so that they can’t identify each other.

When the police show up on the robbery sight within minutes, they suspect someone in their midst is an undercover cop.

9. Scarface (1983)

Tony Montana and his friend Manny Ray, refugees from Cuba, try to start a new life in Miami.

After becoming unsuccessful they start to sell cocaine to dealers around the world. As Montana’s company becomes bigger and bigger, so does his paranoia, his cocaine addiction and his penchant for crime.

10. Heat (1995)

Neil McCauley is a thief and a good one at that. His life motto is ‘Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you spot the heat around the corner,’ evidently he begins to fall in love.

However, Detective Vincent Hanna is on McCauley and his crews’ tail after leaving clues at their last job.
