Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes

Directed by Guy Richie it seems that the lack of profit Rock N Rolla made, just under $6million in the US, has not stopped him.

In fact he is doing a total u-turn  directing this periodic action film taking him away from his comfort zone of gangster films.

The film set Victorian times and revolves around Holmes (Robert Downey Jr) and Watson (Jude Law) stopping a conspiracy to destroy Britain.

Sherlock Holmes was created by Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He then went on to publish 60 stories between 1887 and 1927.

Holmes was a London-based consulting detective who was renowned for bringing observation into crime solving and teaming up with forensic science to solve the most difficult cases.

His assistant Watson,  gives him practical assistance in his cases and is often referred to in the books as his “Boswell”

The stories are a frame narrative from Watson’s point of view giving summaries on Sherlock’s cases, building up suspense and establishing the ultimate connection to the reader.

Holmes has then been converted onto the big screen and everyone is fascinated by his adventures.

He is the most frequently filmed fictional character with an astounding 200 film/ television appearances to date.

The first film know to be made about Sherlock Holmes is the 1939 films The Hound of the Baskervilles closely followed by the sequel The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

Played by Basil Rathbone with Nigel Bruce as Watson, 20th Century Fox created the first Holmes films to be set in Victorian era rather than their contemporary time.

The Holmes fascination died down soon after that but was resurrected between 1921 and 1923 they then went on to capitalize on the detective producing a total of 47 two-reelers.

West End actor Ellie Norwood played Holmes while Hurbert Willis stared as Watson.

Holmes has been made into a bit of a joke and people have often poked fun at Watson and Holmes relationship..

The 1988 film Without a Clue took on a comedic twist with Dr. Watson (Ben Kingsley)as the brains behind the operation.

The comedy sees Watson script all of Holmes' (Michael Cane) solutions, as he discovers people would believe in Holmes, no one was ready to accept, Dr. Watson, Crime Doctor.

The new Sherlock Holmes movie will see fans of the books flooding to the cinema to catch a glimpse of Robert Downey JR’s version of the detective.

His sidekick Watson (Jude Law) is set not to disappoint either with Watson being portrayed as the more serious type instead of the bumbling fool in recent past times.

Rumours are circulated that a sequel may follow if the film goes down well with movie goers and fans.

But this may be out showed by Columbia Pictures who are planning a Holmes comedy.

Starring Sacha Baron Cohen as the great detective, the script is currently being written by Etan Cohen and will be co-produced by Judd Apatow.

This could be set to anger fans and maybe seen as disrespecting the novel and previous films, but the script is subject to change.

With these radically different versions to hit the big screen it will be interesting to see which movie captures the audiences eye more.
