Revolt of the Zombies

Revolt of the Zombies

Okay maybe Quarantine isn’t exactly a zombie movie, but a mysterious disease that causes people to crazy, and infect others by biting them is close enough. So we’re taking this time to look back at over 80 years of movies following the creepy undead and other disease films starting with the 1930s to the 1950s.

1930

1932 - White Zombie: When Harron arrives on the isle with his lovely fiancée, Madeline (Madge Bellamy), a wealthy fellow traveller, Charles Beaumont (Robert Frazer), offers his lush plantation home for their nuptials.

Unfortunately, Beaumont has become smitten with Madeline and enters into an unholy alliance with zombie master Legendre to win possession of her-alive or undead.

They arrange for Madeline to fall ill and die, and then be resurrected as a zombie-and Charles' love slave. Who will ultimately possess the beautiful bride is decided in the film's final deadly struggle.

1936 - Revolt of the Zombies: On the Franco-Austrian Frontier during WW I, an oriental priest, chaplain of a French colonial regiment, is condemned to life imprisonment because he possesses the power of turning men into zombies.

As the priest, in his prison cell, is preparing to burn the parchment containing the location of the secret formula, Colonel Mazovia (Roy D'Arcy, the accented version of Theodore Lorch) kills the priest and takes the partially-burned parchment.

Fade to after the war to an expedition of representatives from all the Allied countries (only those with colonial interests it appears) being sent to Cambodia to find and destroy forever the Secret of the Zombies.

1940

1940 - The Ghost Breakers: Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard's comic timing is excellent, and the works on which they are teamed together contain some of the funniest moments filmed by either actor. Hope plays Larry Lawrence, a New York City detective who becomes involved in a gangster-related hotel shoot-out.

Believing he has killed a man, Lawrence hides in a trunk owned by Mary Carter (Goddard). When Lawrence gets out of the trunk, he finds himself on a steamboat, as Carter is en route to a castle which she has recently inherited on a small island off the coast of Cuba.

While aboard the ship, Carter and Lawrence are told of rumours that the castle is haunted, but they remains steadfast in their will to visit it.

1943 - Revenge of the Zombies: When Dr. Von Altermann's wife Lila dies mysteriously at his spooky mansion, her friends and relations suspect murder. They little suspect he's turning her into a zombie, to join the army of living dead he hopes to devote to the Nazi cause.

All that stands in his way: Lila, though dead, has developed a will of her own. Meanwhile, Lila's brother Scott and his friends are increasingly alarmed by the eerie events.

1950

1955 - Zombies of the Stratosphere:Security agent Larry Martin, who can fly with an experimental rocket suit, investigates clandestine visits to earth by a Martian spaceship.

Meanwhile, villainous Martians conspire with a traitorous atomic scientist to blast earth out of its orbit and replace it with Mars! Can Larry and his cohort Bob Wilson stop the Martians before they complete their dastardly project?

1957 - Zombies of Mora Tau: American tycoon George Harrison, his beautiful wife, Mona, and deep-sea diver Jeff Clark are off the coast of Africa hoping to salvage a fortune in diamonds at the bottom of the sea near the voodoo-haunted island of Mora Tau, and are joined by an English girl named Jan.

The treasure is reported to be guarded by Zombies, walking dead-men doomed to roam the earth until men stop trying to find the sacred treasure.
