What If

What If

In recent years, we have seen so many actors launch their careers thanks to the success of a huge franchise.

Some of today’s biggest young stars have come from the likes of Harry Potter, Twilight, and Transformers - but now they are trying to forge a career away from the roles that made them superstars.

We take a look at some of the actors that were catapulted to fame thanks to blockbusters, and the roles that they are now tackling post franchise success.

- Daniel Radcliffe

Daniel Radcliffe was plucked from obscurity back in 2001 when he was cast as Harry Potter in a big screen adaptation of the smash hit novels.

Ten years and eight movie later, Radcliffe was one of the most successful and recognisable young actors working in Hollywood... but what would happen after Harry Potter ended?

Radcliffe has tackled a wide range of roles in recent years that have seen him star in film, television and in the theatre.

He starred in December Boys and TV movie My Boy Jack before finding huge success with The Woman in Black at the beginning of 2012.

The movie was his first stab at horror as he took on the central role of Arthur Kipps in the adaptation of the Susan Hill novel. He delivered a terrific performance, and the film was a box office smash.

A Young Doctor's Notebook and Kill Your Darlings have followed, and this week he is back with comedy What If. And we are going to be seeing plenty of Radcliffe as Horns, Frankenstein & Trainwreck are all set to follow.

Woman In Black

- Keira Knightley

Keira Knightley had already enjoyed success before she landed the role of Elizabeth Swann in Pirates of the Caribbean, but it was this franchise that shot her to global fame.

The trilogy of films showed off Knightley as a swashbuckling heroine, but since she left the franchise, she has taken on a wide range of roles that have shown her versatility.

Her collaboration with director Joe Wright has been a fruitful one, with Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, and Anna Karenina have seen her deliver terrific performances. Pride & Prejudice saw her pick up her first Best Actress Oscar nomination.

She has continued to mix and match her roles moving from thriller A Dangerous Method to comedy/drama Seeking a Friend for the End of the World to action film Jacky Ryan: Shadow Recruit - working with some of the most famous directors along the way.

Knightley will be back later this year with Say When (Laggies) and Imitation Game with Benedict Cumberbatch. She has also completed work on adventure/thriller Everest.

Anna Karenina

- Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattinson shot to fame in 2008 when he landed the role of Edward Cullen in the adaptation of Twilight.

The actor did tackle very different roles during his Twilight years, with the likes of Cosmopolis and Water for Elephants under his belt.

Since the franchise ended back in 2012, Pattinson has been working non-stop on a wide range of movies and roles: he really is one to keep an eye on over the next couple of years.

He returned to the big screen last week - his first film since Breaking Dawn Part 2 - as he teamed up with Guy Pearce for The Rover.

This gritty and violent film shows Pattinson in a role that we have never seen him before - it really is a terrific performance.

And things are only going to get better for the actor as we are going to be seeing him in Maps to the Stars - which reunites him with director David Cronenberg - Life and Queen of the Desert.

Cosmopolis

- Shia LaBeouf

Shia LaBeouf is another actor who had enjoyed success as a youngster, but it was the Transformers franchise that really sent his career rocketing to new heights.

LaBeouf took on the role of Sam Witwicky for the first time in 2007, before reprising the role in two further Transformers movies in 2009 and 2011.

Since leaving the Transformers franchise behind, LaBeouf has stayed away from blockbusters, sticking to more dramatic and some risqué film projects.

Crime/drama Lawless saw him work with director John Hillcoat, before moving on to The Company You Keep and Nymphomaniac: the latest offering from filmmaker Lars von Trier.

We will only be seeing LaBeouf on the big screen on one more occasion this year, as he joins Brad Pitt in war drama Fury.

Directed by David Ayer, LaBeouf will be part of a tank crew during the Second World War.

Lawless

- Kristen Stewart

Kristen Stewart was no stranger to the big screen when she landed the role of Bella Swan in the Twilight franchise, but it was the film that really made her name.

Stewart may have been an actress who was enjoying major blockbuster success, but she was not someone who would shy away from the more dramatic roles.

The likes of Adventureland, Welcome to the Rileys and On the Road have followed whilst working on the Twilight franchise, but now she is exploring new characters and roles.

Stewart has a couple of roles to watch out for this year, with Camp X-Ray and Clouds of Sils Maria: both of which have done well on the festival circuit.

She has also completed work on Still Alice, Anesthesia, American Ultra, and she is currently filming Equals.

Camp X-Ray

Other actors who have found success after moving away from huge franchises include Emma Watson, Elijah Wood, and Zac Efron.

What If is released 20th August.
