If you are a Marvel film fan, it is going to be an exciting few years with a range of established and new franchises on the horizon - it will all be brought to an epic conclusion in 2018 and 2019 with a two-part Avengers film.

Katee Sackhoff

Katee Sackhoff

Captain Marvel - that's Ms Marvel to you and me - is one of the films on the horizon, and will be Marvel's first female led superhero movie, which is not before time if you ask me.

That just leaves us with one question… which actress is going to land the role of Captain Marvel and lead this new franchise to success? We take a some of the stars who could take on the role of Carol Danvers in the upcoming film.

- Katee Sackhoff

Katee Sackhoff would be the obvious choice for the role of Danvers, as fans have been campaigning online for her to take on this role for quite some time - long before it was announced that this movie was going to be on the Marvel release schedule.

Sackhoff has the action pedigree to take on the role with Battlestar Galactica and Riddick already under her belt. There also was talk a little earlier this year that she had been in talks with Marvel about the role.

However, Sackhoff remains an actress who is a little under the radar with audiences and Marvel will need to decide what kind of profile they need the actress who takes on this role to have. Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston were made stars by their roles as Thor and Loki, and Marvel could well do the same with Sackhoff should she land the role.

However, it has always been seen as a 'risk' to make a female led superhero movie & so this is a film that really dies need to succeed when it hit's the big screen - is there are great chance of that if the lead actress is more of a household name?

Don't be surprised to hear that Sackhoff is one of the actresses that Marvel talk to about this role. Fans could well get their way.

- Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain is one of the most in demand actresses in Hollywood at the moment and has been very vocal in her demand for a female-led superhero film in recent weeks. She threw her support behind Scarlett Johansson and Black Widow to be Marvel's first female superhero movie - I have to say, I couldn't have agreed with her more.

We haven't seen Chastain in too many blockbuster and action roles during her career, - despite being linked to the role of Black Widow and Dr Maya Hansen in recent years - but I think she would be the perfect choice.

Not only is she a bankable name and big star, but she is turning out to be one of the finest actresses around and could bring some real power and gravitas to this role - much like Robert Downey Jr has done with Iron Man.

I am a huge fan of Jessica Chastain, and have been for some time, and really would to see her give the superhero genre a go. However, with Chastain as in demand an actress as she is, would she be able to commit to the multi-deal contract that will inevitably come the way of whoever snags this role?

- Emily Blunt

Emily Blunt is another of my favourite actresses at the moment, and is someone who came so close to landing the role of Black Widow when they were casting for Iron Man 2. Blunt was one of the early choices for the role, but had to turn it down to some schedule issues.

Blunt has already shown this year that she can take on a major action role, having starred alongside Tom Cruise in The Edge of Tomorrow - she really is terrific as the alien killing Sgt Rita Vrataski.

She has already expressed an interest in being part of the superhero genre and the multiple movies that would come with that, and she would become a major part of the Marvel world going forward.

While Blunt has already enjoyed huge box office success and is a star already, the role of Captain Marvel could really see her star rocket even further.

- Natalie Dormer

Natalie Dormer is an actress who has been on the rise in the last couple of years with the likes of Game of Thrones and The Tudors under her belt. She is going to become even better known this year as she is set to be one of the new faces on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1.

An actress who is on the rise and who already has a solid fan base could well be the way to go for Marvel, and Dormer could well be the perfect choice as she is both talented and beautiful.

Dormer may be on the rise, but she is still looking forward that main breakthrough film role, and Carol Danvers could well be it. This is a role that she could stay with for some time and really build into a formidable and iconic female character.

She has got the sass and the swagger to make Danvers a really likable character but has the strength and the power as an actress to make her a really tough and exciting character. I think she really would be a terrific choice.

- Margot Robbie

Another actress who has been turning heads over the last year is Margot Robbie; her role alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street has really put her on the map.

Robbie is going to become a familiar face on the big screen over the next year, with the likes of Suite Francaise, Focus, Z for Zachariah and Tarzan all on the horizon - this would be the perfect time to get her into a big franchise that would make her even more of a star.

Robbie has shown her acting capabilities in the last year and, much like Scarlett Johansson, she has that sexiness to go along with it. However, Robbie is an actress who is on just about everyone's radar at the moment and Marvel need to snap her up quick if they want to tie her up into a multi-picture deal.

- Rosamund Pike

Rosamund Pike is an actress who has been around for quite some time and has worked on Die Another Day, Jack Reacher, Pride & Prejudice, and The World's End over the years.

However, it is in 2014 and her role as Amy Dunne in David Fincher's adaptation of Gone Girl that has really seen her profile rocket. Gone Girl has been met with critical acclaim this autumn, and Pike it being tipped by some to land an Oscar nomination for her performance.

Pike is perhaps not the first name that would spring to mind when casting a role like this, but it would certainly be a great move by Marvel if they were to snap her up.

I think Pike would be an exciting choice, as she is an actress with tons of experience - and with the success that she is experiencing at the moment, it certainly would grab the headlines.

Other actresses to consider include Charlize Theron, Alice Eve, and Jessica Biel. While some are even suggesting Emma Stone - although that does seem unlikely after her role in The Incredible Spider Man.

Captain Marvel is set to hit the big screen in 2018.
