The 39 Steps

The 39 Steps

Our look at some of Alfred Hitchcock's best films continues today as The 39 Steps is in the spotlight.

It was back in 1935 when the film hit the big screen and it is widely regarded as one of Hitchcock's finest pieces of work.

The film is loosely based on the novel The Thirty Nine Steps by John Buchan and starred Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll.

A man in London tries to help a counterespionage agent. But when the agent is killed and he stands accused, he must go on the run to both save himself and also stop a spy ring trying to steal top secret information.

There are so many elements and genres to this film from thriller to comedy and melodrama to surrealism.

And while Hitchcock is juggling all of these genres he is keeping his audiences on the edge of their seats as the suspense throughout is fantastic.

The characters of Hannay and Pamela are perhaps an unlikely couple but there is fantastic chemistry between the pair.

They both deliver standout performances as they find themselves plunged into the unknown but they fully accept the surreal nature of the story.

Hitchcock is not always known for his zippy pace but there is a real energy to The 39 Steps and we skip through the story with unexpected speed.

The 39 Steps is an intriguing and exciting movie that shows off Hitchcock at his very best.

Hitchcock is released 8th February.
