Jennifer Lawrence in American Hustle

Jennifer Lawrence in American Hustle

The race for the 2014 Academy Awards is hotting up with the announcement of the Golden Globe nominations last week.

It looks like every major acting category is going to be a hard fought battle... and Best Supporting Actress will be no different.

Last year Anne Hathaway was the run away favourite for the award - she went on to win - but, at the moment, there is no stand out favourite.

We take a look at some of the actresses that could well be in the mix when the Oscar nominations are revealed in the new year.

*Certainty For Best Supporting Actress Nomination*

- Jennifer Lawrence - American Hustle

Jennifer Lawrence picked up a Best Actress Oscar earlier this year, and she could be set to add a Best Supporting Actress in 2014.

It isn't very often that we see an actor/actress pick up gongs two years on the trot, but Lawrence could well do just that.

American Hustle sees her reunite with Silver Linings Playbook filmmaker David O.Russell for crime/drama.

American Hustle is being championed by the critics and is set to be a major Oscars force.

Lawrence has already picked up nominations at the SAG and Golden Globes and has won at the New York Film Critics Circle awards and Indiana Film Critics Association Awards.

- Lupita Nyong'o - 12 Years A Slave

Lupita Nyong'o is making her big screen debut with 12 Years A Slave - not that you would know it as she delivers a knock out performance.

She takes on the role of plantation slave Patsey; who suffers physical and sexual abuse at the hands of plantation owner Epps.

It is an incredibly powerful performance from this new actress as she really delivers on the pain and the suffering of this character.

Nyong'o has already picked up a series of critics awards and will in the running for a Golden Globe.

- June Squibb - Nebraska

June Squibb has really started to make some awards waves in recent weeks for her performance in the fantastic Nebraska.

While the movie is likely to miss out for Best Picture, Squibb and Bruce Dern could well waltz away with major Oscar prizes.

Squibb has already won the Boston Society of Film Critic Awards and picked up nominations at the Independent Spirit Awards and Satellite Awards.

But her campaign for an Oscar nomination went up a notch last week as she bagged a Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe nod.

It would be a first Oscar nomination for Squibb at the age of eighty four.

*Actresses To Watch Out For*

- Julia Roberts - August: Osage County

Julia Roberts will return to the big screen in the new year with August: Osage County: her first film since Mirror Mirror: The Untold Adventures of Snow White.

The movie looks at the lives of the strong-willed women of the Weston family, whose paths have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Oklahoma house they grew up in, and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them.

Roberts is joined by an all star cast as Meryl Streep, Ewan McGregor, Abigail Breslin, Chris Cooper and Sam Shepard are all on board.

Roberts has had a quiet awards season so far in terms of wins, but was really thrown into the mix last week with an SAG and a Golden Globe nomination for her performance.

Roberts' last Oscar nomination came the year that she triumphed for Erin Brockovich.

- Oprah Winfrey - The Butler

All autumn Oprah Winfrey has been the favourite of many to be a major force on the awards circuit for her performance in The Butler.

The movie sees her take on the role of Gloria Gaines; the wife of central character Cecil Gaines, who served a series of Presidents during his time at the White House.

So far, Winfrey has picked up nominations at the likes of the SAG, People's Choice Awards and Satellite Awards, but was overlooked at the Golden Globes when the nominations were announced last week.

Despite the GG snub, that does not mean that she will be overlooked by the Academy.

- Sally Hawkins - Blue Jasmine

A surprise Golden Globe nomination came the way of Sally Hawkins as she was recognised for her role in Blue Jasmine.

The British actress already has a Best Actress - Musical/Comedy Golden Globe under her belt for Happy Go Lucky, and it is fantastic to see her in the mix once again.

She takes on the role of Jasmine's sister Ginger, whose live is turned upside down when Jasmine comes to stay with her.

Hawkins has picked up nominations at the Independent Film Awards and Satellite Awards, but her Oscar campaign has now revved into life.

This category is going to be tough, but at the moment it looks like Jennifer Lawrence is the favourite.
