All Is Lost

All Is Lost

Nothing finishes off Christmas then visiting the cinema for a fantastic Boxing Day film; it is also a great excuse to get away from some of the annoying relatives.

Boxing Day 2013 is set to be a treat for film fans as the movies on show are a mix of Oscar contenders, action and adventure.

We take a look at some of the movies that will be lighting up the best screen this festive period.

- All Is Lost - released 26th December

All Is Lost marks the return of Robert Redford as he teams up with director J.C. Chandor for the first time.

The movie is already being tipped as an Oscar contender - Redford's central performance in particular will be a major Oscar player.

All Is Lost is being called one of Redford's finest moments as it is a solo performance from the iconic actor.

Redford takes on the role of a man who fights for survival as he is stranded out at sea during a storm.

Chandor has directed the film and penned the screenplay as he returns to the director's chair for the first time since Margin Call back in 2012.

All Is Lost looks set to be one of the most powerful movies of the year and has a fantastic central performance from Redford that is not to be missed.

- Secret Life Of Walter Mitty - released 26th December

Ben Stiller is juggling acting and directing responsibilities as he returns this December with Secret Life Of Walter Mitty.

The movie is based on the short story by James Thurber and has been adapted into a screenplay by Steve Conrad.

Stiller will take on the title role as well as returning to the director's chair for the first time since he helmed comedy Tropic Thunder.

The movie follows Walter Mitty, day-dreamer who escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action.

When his job along with that of his co-worker (Kristen Wiig) are threatened, Walter takes action in the real world embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined.

Stiller has brought together an all star cast that includes Kristen Wiig, Shirley MacLaine and double Oscar winner Sean Penn.

- 47 Ronin - released 26th December

Keanu Reeves shows off his action side this December with his latest film 47 Ronin.

The movie marks the feature film directorial debut of Carl Rinsch, who has brought together a cast that includes Reeves, Hiroyuki Sanada, Kô Shibasaki and Tadanobu Asano.

After a treacherous warlord kills their master and banishes their kind, 47 leaderless samurai vow to seek vengeance and restore honour to their people.

Driven from their homes and dispersed across the land, this band of Ronin must seek the help of Kai (Reeves) - a half-breed they once rejected - as they fight their way across a savage world of mythic beasts, shape-shifting witchcraft and wondrous terrors.

47 Ronin is unlike anything else that is on this big screen this December and is set to be a samurai fuelled, action packed ride.

- How to Make Money Selling Drugs - released 26th December

If you are a documentary lover then Boxing Day is going to be a real treat for you as How to Make Money Selling Drugs hits the big screen.

The movie sees director Matthew Cooke make the leap from TV into feature film

A shockingly candid examination of how a street dealer can rise to cartel lord with relative ease, How to Make Money Selling Drugs is an insider’s guide to the violent but extremely lucrative drug industry.

Told from the perspective of former drug dealers, and featuring interviews with rights advocates Russell Simmons, Susan Sarandon, and David Simon (creator of 'The Wire'), the film gives you the lessons you need to start your own drug empire while exposing the corruption behind the "war on drugs."

2013 has been a fantastic year for documentary films - we really have been treated to some great films - and How to Make Money Selling Drugs will see this genre end the year with a bang.

- The Railway Man - released 1st January.

Another film to watch out for over the festive period if The Railway Man, as it is the big New Year's Day release.

This is a movie that I have particularly been looking forward to as it is set to boast a very powerful central performance from Oscar winner Colin Firth.

The movie is based on the memoir of Eric Lomax; Firth and Jeremy Irvine will play the older and young version of the same man.

Firth and Irvine are joined by an all star cast as Nicole Kidman, Stellan Skarsgård and Hiroyuki Sanada are all on board.

Firth takes on the role of Eric Lomax, a British Army officer who is tormented as a prisoner of war at a Japanese labour camp during World War II.

Decades later, Lomax discovers that the Japanese interpreter he holds responsible for much of his treatment is still alive and sets out to confront him, and his haunting past.

Just like The Impossible at the beginning of 2013, The Railway Man is set to be a powerful star to the 2014 movie year.

If you are playing catch-up this festive season then the likes of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Frozen, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues and Kill Your Darlings will all still be on general release.
