Duncan Jones

Duncan Jones

Duncan Jones' directorial debut Moon really put the filmmaker on the map, and since then he has quietly been making a name for himself.

Duncan Jones delivered one of the best directorial debuts of all time when sci-fi film Moon hit the big screen back in 2009.

This was unlike any other sci-fi film that had been released at that time as it told a very human story about a man wanting to return to his family.

The film centred around Sam Bell, a man who had spent three years working alone on the Moon. But as his health begins to deteriorate he discovers that everything isn't what it seems.

This was just a beautiful and powerful film from start to finish as Jones delivered a film that was driven forward by this central character; played magnificently by Sam Rockwell.

It came as no surprise that Moon had the critics ranting and raving at how great it was as it really was an incredibly special film.

The movie went on to be nominated for a sting of awards - including seven British Independent Film Awards and two Baftas - Duncan Jones really had arrived.

He followed this wonderful debut up with Source Code two years later, as he teams up with Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan and Vera Farmiga.

This was a movie on a larger scale than his debut but Jones still managed to find the human story in the middle of all the action.

However, it won't be until 2015 that we see Jones in the director's chair again as he is about to start work on Warcraft.

The movie is based on the World of Warcraft series and is set to be the biggest project of Jones' career to date.

Filming is believed to be getting underway in January of next year, but no cast for the film has yet been announced.

Jones has so far delivered films that are all about the story and great character development, and it will be interesting to see what he does with a project on this scale.

Computer game movies haven't been great over the years - some of them have been downright terrible - but with a director like Jones at the helm, we could see Warcraft buck that trend.
