Eddie Redmayne has made it two major awards out of two as he scooped the Best Actor gong at the Screen Actors Guild Awards last night.

Redmayne has already triumphed at the Golden Globes earlier this month, and has now possibly edged ahead as the favourite for the Oscar. The British actor was recognised for his performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, in what was the only award for the biopic last night.

Redmayne saw off the challenge from Benedict Cumberbatch, Steve Carell, Jake Gyllenhaal, and other Oscar favourite Michael Keaton of Birdman.

While Keaton did miss out on the Best Actor award, there was success for Birdman as it scooped the award from Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. This is the SAG's equivalent of Best Picture and saw Birdman beat off competition from Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, and The Theory of Everything.

There were no surprises in the Best Actress category, as Juliane Moore once again triumphed for her central performance in Still Alice. She once again beat Jennifer Aniston, Felicity Jones, Rosamund Pike, and Reese Witherspoon to the award.

Both Patricia Arquette and JK Simmons triumphed at the Golden Globes for Boyhood and Whiplash a couple of weeks back and there was more awards success for the pair in the supporting categories.

Both Arquette and Simmons have scooped Oscar nominations and are now the hot favourites to make it three wins out of three when the Academy Awards take place in February.
