Effie Gray

Effie Gray

Dakota Fanning is set to return to the big screen this October as she takes on the title role in new period drama Effie Gray.

Effie Gray sees Fanning team up with director Richard Laxton, as he returns to the director's chair for his first feature film since An Englishman in New York back in 2009.

Emma Thompson's writing skills are on show once again, and Effie Gray is the first original screenplay from the Oscar winner.

As well as penning the screenplay, Thompson will also star in the film, and she and Fanning feature in this first clip from the film:

The film explores the fascinating, true story of the relationship between Victorian art critic John Ruskin, his teenage bride, Euphemia 'Effie' Gray and Pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais.

Tom Sturridge will star as Millais in the film, while Greg Wise, Robbie Coltrane, David Suchet, and Derek Jacobi are also on board.

We haven't been treated to too many period dramas this year, but Effie Gray is promising to be a real treat.

Thompson has already proved herself a terrific writer with Sense and Sensibility and Nanny McPhee and I can't wait to see her first original work.

Effie Gray is released 10th October.
