After Earth

After Earth

Over the years we have seen a whole host of fathers and sons share the big screen in a movie.

This week sees Will and Jaden Smith do just that as they team up for science fiction flick After Earth.

So we take a look at some of the fathers and sons who have taken the plunge and worked together.

- Will & Jaden Smith

It was back in 2007 when Will and Jaden Smith teamed up for the first time in The Pursuit of Happyness; a movie that told the real life story of how Chris Gardener turned his life around.

They played father and son in a movie that was Will Smith's finest hour and Jaden's big screen debut.

It was a movie that was about a father and son's struggles - made all the most emotional by the fact it was a true story and that Will and Jaden shared that family bond.

This week they will play father and son once again in M. Night Shyamalan's After Earth; a movie that sees them having to fight to survive on a planet that has evolved to kill.

Will & Jaden Smith have shown that they are a great acting team and I have no doubt that we will be seeing them team up again in the future.

- Tom & Colin Hanks

Tom Hanks is one of the greatest actors of his generation and his son Colin has bravely followed him onto the big screen.

It was back in 2008 that they teamed up for the first and only time to play father and son in The Great Buck Howard.

The movies follows Troy (Colin) as he goes against his father's wishes and leaves law school to pursue his dream of becoming a writer.

The movie sees him become a road manager for The Great Buck Howard as he tries to find his way and prove to his father that he can succeed in the career that he has chosen.

It is surprising how little Tom and Colin Hanks have worked together over the years and I would love for them to do another project together.

- Martin Sheen & Emilio Estevez

Martin Sheen teamed up with his son Emilio Estevez in 2011 as Estevez brought The Way to the big screen.

The movie was an adaptation of the book by Jack Hitt and follows a father Tom (Sheen) as he goes to recover the body of his estranged son (Estevez) who has died while travelling the 'El camino de Santiago'.

The Way is a powerful and moving film about a father and son reconnecting after one of them has passed away as Tom sets out to complete the historical pilgrimage his son began.

It is a powerful and emotional performance from Sheen and you can see he draws on being a father and how he would feel if he lost his son for this role.

Estevez really does excel in the director's chair as he delivers a movie that is funny, charming as well as moving; not to mention he brings a great performance out of his dad.

- Martin & Charlie Sheen

But Sheen is no stranger to sharing the screen with his son have teamed up with Charlie Sheen for Wall Street in 1987.

The pair played father and son in the Oliver Stone directed film about corruption on Wall Street.

Bud Fox (Charlie) is a man who want to be a successful stockbroker but the values of that world conflict with those held by his father (Sheen), who is a maintenance foreman for an airline.

Bud has a hand in the near destruction of the company that his father works for - not to mention his father's health is put at risk.

Martin and Charlie teamed up on the small screen as well as Martin guest starred in Two And A Half Men.

- Kirk, Michael & Cameron

Having two generations of one family in one movie is pretty good but in It Runs in the Family back in 2003 Kirk, Michael and Cameron Douglas teamed up.

The trio play three generations of one family in the Fred Scheposo directed comedy that look at the difficulties of family and the father/son relationship.

There is a very real life feel to the relationships in this movie and that really does lift this film up to more than just another family problem comedy.

It is not often that you see three generations of one family on the big screen.

Other father and son combos include Jerry & Ben Stiller in Zoolander and The Heartbreak Kid, James & Scott Caan in Mercy and Donald & Kiefer Sutherland in Max Dugan Returns and A Time To Kill.

After Earth is released 7th June.
