We’re a little late with our usual slate of films you should be watching that come out this month, but with August being such a great month for big screen releases, we’ve decided to still take a look at everything that’s out this month that’s worth your attention. Here are the 5 Films Everybody Should Watch This August

1. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets – Out Now

This one’s managed to really divide those who have seen it so far. Based on the French science-fiction comic book series by Pierre Christin, the film stars big names such as Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne and even Rihanna. Taking place in a space station known as Alpha, where millions of creatures live peacefully side by side, things of course get a little dramatic as the story progresses. It’s a film that has to be seen to be believed; check it out and you certainly won’t regret it.

2. Atomic Blonde – Released August 9

Described as the crown jewel of Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligent Service, Agent Lorraine Broughton is a character that’ll soon be on everybody’s lips. Played by Charlize Theron, the agent is willing to deploy any of her skills in a bid to survive and succeed and here, she’s tasked with going alone into Berlin to deliver a priceless dossier out of the city. Whilst there she teams with station chief David Percival (James McAvoy), but with vicious enemies on their tail, will they both survive the adventure?

3. Annabelle: Creation – Released August 11

The world of The Conjuring makes its return, as the creepy Annabelle doll gets the origin story all big fans have been waiting for. Early reviews say that this film is a brilliant work of horror and something that every fan of the genre should see as soon as they can. Whether or not its success can reach the dizzying heights of The Conjuring and its follow-up however remains to be seen.

4. The Dark Tower – Released August 18

Though the critics haven’t been too kind to this Stephen King novel adaptation, this new story taking place in the world the author made famous is led by Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, so there must be some sort of brilliance woven throughout it! Attempting to launch the Dark Tower universe so that it can be seen on both the big and small screen by its fans, this SHOULD serve as a great launch pad for the franchise. Let’s hope those critics’ words don’t have too much of an effect on this one in the box office…

5. The Hitman’s Bodyguard – Released August 17

Ryan Reynolds stars here as the world’s top protection agent, and is here called upon to protect the life of the man he absolutely hates; one of the planet’s most notorious hitmen, played by Samuel L Jackson. With Gary Oldman on board as a merciless Eastern European dictator and plenty of action, this is a film that any action junkie should enjoy.
