American Hustle

American Hustle

The Best Picture categories are also the most exciting when it comes to awards ceremonies and, at the Golden Globes, we get that excitement twice over.

Today we are looking at the Best Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy; some of these could well be in the running at the Oscars.

- American Hustle

American Hustle is a movie that has been whipping up critic and awards frenzy since the middle of 2013, it really has been receiving praise left, right, and centre.

The movie sees David O. Russell in the director's chair, while Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, and Jennifer Lawrence are all on board.

American Hustle tells the story of brilliant con man Irving Rosenfeld (Bale), who along with his equally cunning and seductive British partner Sydney Prosser (Adams) is forced to work for a wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Cooper).

DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia that's as dangerous as it is enchanting.

The film looks fantastic, as O.Russell really has captured the look of the period really well: many of the costumes are just beautiful and the cast look stunning.

- Her

Her is another film that is winning praise from just about everywhere as Spike Jonze teams up with Joaquin Phoenix.

Phoenix stars alongside Rooney Mara, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig and Amy Adams, while Scarlett Johansson lends her voice to the character of Samantha.

Theodore Twombly is heartbroken after the end of a long relationship, he becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive entity in its own right, individual to each user.

Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet 'Samantha,' a bright, female voice, who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow, in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other.

Her is a touching, thought provoking and funny movie that really is a terrific film about relationships.

- Inside Llewyn Davis

Joel and Ethan Coen have always delivered movies that are awards worthy, and they are in the mix again with Inside Llewyn Davis.

Inside Llewyn Davis is their first film since True Grit and sees them team up with Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, John Goodman and Justin Timberlake.

Inside Llewyn Davis follows a week in the life of a young folk singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961.

Guitar in tow, huddled against the unforgiving New York winter, he is struggling to make it as a musician against seemingly insurmountable obstacles... some of them of his own making.

This is another unique period piece from Joel and Ethan Coen that is so beautifully simplistic as well as heartbreaking.

- Nebraska

Nebraska marks the return of Alexander Payne to the director's chair for the first time since The Descendants.

Payne is famed for delivering great character driven movies, and Nebraska is a movie that follows that trend.

An aging, booze-addled father makes the trip from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son in order to claim a million-dollar Mega Sweepstakes Marketing prize.

What starts out as a road movie, turns into a film that becomes about life, where you are from and relationships. The central performances from Bruce Dern and Will Forte are just fantastic.

- The Wolf Of Wall Street

Martin Scorsese is one of the greatest directors of his generation and is back with The Wolf of Wall Street.

This is his fifth collaboration with Leonardo DiCaprio and the first since Shutter Island.

New York stockbroker Jordan Belfort. From the American dream to corporate greed, Belfort goes from penny stocks and righteousness to IPOs and a life of corruption in the late 80s.

Excess success and affluence in his early twenties as founder of the brokerage firm Stratton Oakmont warranted Belfort the title "The Wolf of Wall Street."

The Wolf of Wall Street is a frenzy-fuelled movie that is just packed with energy and bite - DiCaprio is also on fire in the lead role as Jordan Belfort.

Winner: American Hustle

The Golden Globe winners will be revealed tomorrow evening.
