Amy Adams in American Hustle

Amy Adams in American Hustle

We have already looked at three Golden Globe acting categories, and they are all going to be close calls when it comes to predicting winners.

The Best Actress - Comedy/Musical category is no different as there are a whole host of terrific performances in the running.

- Amy Adams - American Hustle

Amy Adams is no stranger to the awards season having picked up a whole host of nominations in recent years. She is back in the running again with her performance in American Hustle.

This is the second time that she has worked with both Christian Bale and director David O.Russell.

It is a sharp, intelligent, and powerful performance from Adams, who plays a con artist who is sucked into the world of mafia and politicians.

Adams has been in the mix during this awards season but it remains to seen if she will be in the Oscar race.

- Julie Delpy - Before Midnight

Before Midnight is one of the most praised movies of 2013 and saw director Richard Linklater reunite with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy.

Before Midnight is the third film in this relationship trilogy, follows on from Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, and continues the story between Jesse and Celine.

Before Midnight is a great character piece and it has been fascinating to see the relationship between these lovers develop and change from movie to movie.

This is another complex and interesting performance from Delpy, as she and Hawke sizzle.

- Greta Gerwig - Frances Ha

Greta Gerwig is an actress who has been on the rise for several years but really did make a splash in 2013 with Frances Ha.

The movie saw her reunite with director Noah Baumbach and together the pair penned the screenplay.

Gerwig really did create one of the most fascinating female characters of the year; she is charming and endearing but not without her faults.

It really was a very charming and touching performance from Gerwig as she really showed herself off as an actress.

- Julia Louis-Dreyfus - Enough Said

Julia Louis-Dreyfus returned to the big screen last year for Enough Said: which was directed by Nicole Holofcener.

The movie followed a divorced woman who decides to pursue the man she's interested in learns he's her new friend's ex-husband.

It is hard to believe that Julia Louis-Dreyfus has been away from the big screen for quite some time before making Enough Said - you do have wonder why she hasn't done more films.

This is such a wonderful performance that is as touching as it is funny.

- Meryl Streep - August: Osage County

Meryl Streep is a dab hand when it comes to the awards season, and she is back in the mix again with August: Osage County.

The movie sees Streep team up with director John Wells as the play by Tracy Letts is brought to the big screen.

This family drama sees old wounds re-opened as they all gather under the same roof for the funeral of Streep's husband.

August: Osage County sees Streep at her wicked best as the matriarch of the Weston family and she really does tear into the witty and funny dialogue. This is a character who speaks her mind no matter what she has to say and who she hurts by saying it.

Winner: Meryl Streep - August: Osage County
