Ridley Scott

Ridley Scott is one of the greatest directors that this country has ever produced, and he has enjoyed a career that has spanned over forty years.

He is back in the director's chair this week with his new film The Counsellor; a movie that brings together a fab cast including Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Cameron Diaz.

Scott has been behind some of the most iconic movies during his extraordinary career, and we take a look at the films that have really performed at the box office.

- Gladiator - $457,640,427

Gladiator remains one of Scott's most famous movies - hard to believe that it was released back in 2000.

The movie saw Scott team up with Russell Crowe for one has become one of the best actor/director partnerships, as Crowe took on the central role of Maximus.

Gladiator was a critical and commercial smash when it hit the big screen as both Scott and Crowe were on fine form behind and in front of the camera.

The film went on gross over $457 million at the global box office as well as being nominated for twelve Oscars. The film went on to scoop Best Picture and Best actor.

- Prometheus - $403 million

Scott is famed for his science fiction movies with the likes of Aliens and Blade Runner under his belt. He returned to this genre last summer with the highly anticipated Prometheus.

The movie was a prequel to Alien and was one of the most talked about films of the year. He brought together a great cast that included Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba and Noomi Rapace.

It was great to see Scott return to the genre that he is famed for and he really did deliver a very beautiful looking movie. Prometheus won over critics and audiences as it grossed $403 million at the global box office.

Prometheus was one of the biggest grossing movies of the year and a sequel is in the pipeline.

- Hannibal - $351,692,268

Scott is a director who has moved around from genre to genre throughout his directing career, and in 2001 he tackled the thriller in the form of Hannibal.

Hannibal was a big screen adaptation of the novel of the same name by Thomas Harris and is set after events of Silence of the Lambs.

Anthony Hopkins returned as Hannibal Lecter, while Julianne Moore took over the role of Clarice Starling.

The reviews for Hannibal may have been a mixed bag, but that didn't stop fans from flocking to see it. It grossed over $351 million and comfortably made back its $87 million budget.

- Robin Hood - $321,669,730

Scott reunited with Crowe back in 2010 in what was their fifth project together; this was the last time that we saw a Scott/Crowe movie hit the big screen.

Crowe took on the title role in the film, which saw him team up with Cate Blanchett, Matthew Macfayden, Max von Sydow and Mark Strong.

Set in In 13th century England, the movie follows Robin and his band of men as they confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power.

It was another mixed response movie for Scott as this was a movie that was neither heavily praised or criticised. It was still a financial success as it grossed over $321 million - easily making back its $155 million budget.

- American Gangster - $266,465,037

It is another Crowe/Scott partnership that rounds off our look at Scott's success at the box office. The pair teamed up for the third time with American Gangster in 2007.

The movie was based on the criminal career of Frank Lucas (played by Denzel Washington) and saw Crowe take on the role of the cop that tries to bring him down.

American Gangster was a hit at the box office as it made over $266 million and engaged with both critics and audiences.

The film went on to pick up nominations at the Golden Globes as well as at the Baftas.

The Counsellor is released 15th November.
