The Love Punch

The Love Punch

You can't beat a good romantic comedy, and Emma Thompson teams up with Pierce Brosnan for The Love Punch this week.

It looks like Thompson and Brosnan are set to make a great team - they are starring together for the first time - as they follow in the footsteps of some great rom-com couples.

To celebrate the release of The Love Punch, we take a look at some of the highest grossing films in this genre over the years.

- Pretty Woman - $463,407,268 million

Pretty Woman remains one of the best rom-coms of all time, as it launched the career of Julia Roberts.

Roberts is unforgettable in her thigh high boots and short skirt, as she took on the role of Vivian in the Garry Marshall directed film.

The movie follows prostitute Vivian as she is hired by wealthy businessman to accompany him to a series of business and social engagements. However, their relationship develops during her week-long stay.

Pretty Woman is still one of the most loved films in this genre, as Roberts and Richard Gere made a terrific acting team.

The movie has grossed well over $463 million, and is one of the most successful romantic comedies of all time.

- Sex and the City - $415,253,641 million

After enjoying huge success on TV, Sex and the City came to the big screen for the first time in 2008 with Michael Patrick King at the helm.

Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Catrall, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristen Davis were back as Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte - and their love lives were as turbulent as ever.

The movie follows Carrie as she plans and prepares for her wedding to Mr Big. However, she has to pick herself back up after he jilts her at the altar.

It has been four years since the TV series had come to an end, and there was a lot of excitement from fans surrounding the film.

The movie was a box office hit in spring of 2008, as it grossed over $415 million. A second film followed two years later.

- What Woman Want - $374,111,707 million

Mel Gibson teamed up with Helen Hunt in 2000 - yes, it really was fourteen years ago - for the very funny What Woman Want.

The movie followed chauvinistic and sexist Nick Marshall who, after an accident, discovers he can hear what women are really thinking.

Marshall is not a particularly likeable character, but Gibson really does ooze charm and humour in this role - he really makes this character work. Not to mention he has a great chemistry with Hunt.

Nancy Meyers was in the director's chair for the film, and steered it towards success. The movie took over $374 million: easily making back its $70 million budget.

- There's Something About Mary - $369,884,651 million

There's Something About Mary featured one of the most iconic movie moments of the noughties, and is still as loved now, as it was when it was released back in 1998.

The movie saw Cameron Diaz, Matt Dillon, Ben Stiller, Chris Elliott, while Peter and Robert Farrelly were in the director's chair.

Written by the Farrelly brothers, Ed Decker and John J. Strauss, the movie followed Ted Stroehmann (Stiller) as he meets up with the girl of his dreams, with whom he had a disastrous date in high school.

There's Something About Mary was one of the big sleeper hits of 2008, and went on to enjoy both critical and commercial success.

The movie took over $369 million, and was the fourth highest grossing movie of the year.

- My Big Fat Greek Wedding - $368,744,044 million

My Big Fat Greek Wedding is one of my personal favourites in this genre as it is a film that really is a lot of fun.

This was only the second big screen outing for Nia Vardalos in the central role of Toula Portokalos: She also penned the screenplay for the film.

The movie follows Toula; a young Greek woman falls in love with a non-Greek but struggles to get her family to accept him.

John Corbett, Michael Constantine, and Lainie Kazan were also on the cast list, while Joel Zwick returned to the director's chair.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding was a sleeper hit in 2002 as it enjoyed big box office success.

The movie grossed over $368 million, despite never topping the box office in the U.S.

- Hitch - $368,100,420 million

In the mid noughties Will Smith had a great run of movies - he is the only actor to have eight consecutive films that grossed over $100 million at the U.S. box office.

Hitch was one of those movies when it was released back in 2005.

Smith took on the role of 'date doctor' Hitch who helps men woo the women that they want. However when Hitch meets Sara, he finds himself struggling.

Smith's great run of movie successes continued as the film grossed over $368 million worldwide.

Other rom-coms that have performed well at the box office included Notting Hill and The Proposal.

The Love Punch is released 18th April.
