Tim Burton

Tim Burton

We have already looked at one actor/director partnership involving Johnny Depp this week, and now we are going to look at a second.

Of course we are talking about Depp’s longstanding partnership with director Tim Burton, which has so far spanned eight movies.

It was back in 1991 when the duo worked together for the first time as Burton brought his take of Beauty and the Beast to the big screen - that film was Edward Scissorhands.

It was the first major film role for Depp as he took on the title role alongside Dianne Wiest and Winona Ryder.

Edward Scissorhands remains one of the best Depp/Burton films as there is a magic to it that we haven’t seen in any other of their collaborations.

Sadly, their second movie Ed Wood was not as successful, but Sleepy Hollow was a success when it was released back in 1999.

Johnny Depp is an actor who has always taken on quirky and slightly off the wall roles and Burton movie has allowed him to continue taking on such parts.

Another of these parts came in 2005 when he took on the role of Willy Wonka in Burton’s take on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

The movie was a box office success as it grossed in excess of $474 million at the global box office by the end of the theatrical release.

The movies between Depp and Burton came thick and fast over the next few years as they moved from stop motion animation with Corpse Bride to the musical with Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Depp took on the role of Sweeney Todd in the film that was grim and dark and saw the actor show off his singing skills.

The movie was another critical success for the duo while Depp picked up another Best Actor Oscar nomination for his central performance.

Their biggest hit came in 2010 as Alice In Wonderland hit the big screen - Depp, of course, took on the role of the Mad Hatter.

While the movie was inspired by Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, Burton did put his own spin on this well known tale.

The movie was a box office smash as it broke through the $1 billion barrier to join a very elite group of movies. While Depp had enjoyed billion dollar success before, this was the first time that a Burton movie had enjoyed such success.

Last year the pair reunited for the eighth time as Dark Shadows hit the big screen, which was based on the gothic soap opera of the same name.

Depp played vampire Barnabus Collins who is released after spending 200 years trapped in a coffin. He comes face to face with the dysfunctional relatives now living in his home as well as his jealous ex-lover, a witch, who has taken over the fishing business in the town in which they live.

This movie showed off Burton at his gothic best, while Depp excelled in another bizarre role and off the wall role.

While the movie didn’t come close to repeating the success of Alice In Wonderland it recouped its budget at the box office. Depp and Burton are one of the most long-standing and successful actor/director partnerships of recent years as they keep on churning out fascinating movies with interesting characters.

It will only be a matter of time before the two team up once again to deliver their latest project.

The Lone Ranger is out now.
