Andy Serkis In Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Motion capture performances are now becoming a regular occurrence on the big screen producing some great characters.

So it's staggering that the argument that 'should motion capture performances be recognised at the Oscars?' is still rumbling on.

Just because you don't see the actor themselves on the big screen with a character like this doesn't detract for the work that that actor or actress has produced.

Surely it is time for the Academy Awards to move with the times and recognise these fabulous performances.

James Franco showed his support last week for Andy Serkis to pick up a nomination for his work in this field.

Serkis delivered another stunning turn in Rise of the Planet of the Apes - it packed such a huge emotional punch it was a remarkable performance from the British actor.

In recent years the likes of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, King Kong, Avatar, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn and Rise of the Planet of the Apes have forged the way for motion capture.

And we are set to see these types of character return to the big screen with the likes of The Hobbit hitting the big screen over the next couple of years.

There are also set to be Avatar and Tintin sequels so motion capture really is on the rise.

It just seems that the Oscars are a little to concerned with awarding run of the mill and safe performances - that not saying that those who win aren't worth or have done some great work - they just seem unwilling to recognise anything new.

It would be great to see the likes of Andy Serkis to pick up an Oscar nod because it would really recognise all the great work that he has done in this area in recent years.
