After Earth

After Earth

M. Night Shyamalan is back in the director's chair this week as he returns to the science fiction genre with After Earth.

The movie brings together Will and Jaden Smith for a second time as they play a father and son who have to fight to survive on a planet that has evolved to kill.

Throughout his career Shyamalan has enjoyed box office success and box office failure so we take a look at just how his movies have performed.

- The Sixth Sense - $672.8 million

Hard to believe but The Sixth Sense was released back in 1999 and remains Shyamalan's most successful film.

It was the movie that really put him on the map as it had one of the best and most memorable twists.

Not only was the film a critical and box office hit but it went on to be nominated for six Oscars; including Best Picture and Best Director.

The Sixth Sense was the movie that really did put Shyamalan on everyone's radar as a director to watch out for.

- Signs - $408.3 million

Signs was Shyamalans's fifth directorial outing when it was released back in 2002 - yes it really is eleven years old.

The movie saw him team up with Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix as brother who fight to project their family from aliens.

This was the first time that Shyamalan had tackled sci-fi and it proved to be a hit for him as fans flocked to cinemas to see the film.

As well as the $408.3 million gross the film was also met well by the critics when it was released.6

- The Last Airbender - $224 million

The Last Airbender was the last time that we saw Shyamalan in the director's chair as he adapted the animated series AvatarL The Last Airbender into a live action film.

Dev Patel, Noah Ringer, Jackson Rathbone and Nicola Peltz were all aboard the film, but they could no save it from the wave after wave of criticism.

The film was made for $150 million and despite being a commercial success taking over $319 million the movie was not met well by critics or cinema goers.

The Last Airbender went on to five Golden Raspberry Awards - including Worst Picture.

- The Village - $256.5 million

Shyamalan is a director who always likes to throw in a great twist... and with The Village he achieved that once again.

The movie is set in a 19th century village that lives in fear of the creatures that live in the woods - but things are not as it seems.

The Village was met with a mixed response by the critics but it did okay at the box office.

With a $60 million budget a gross of $256.6 million made the film a hit but it could not match the success of previous movie Signs.

- Unbreakable - $248.1 million

In 2000 Shyamalan reunited with Bruce Willis for drama Unbreakable; a film that he once again directed and wrote.

Samuel L. Jackson and Robin Wright were also on board as the film followed David Dunn, who discovers something extraordinary about himself after an accident.

The superhero theme to the film was praised when it was released as, one the whole, critics were supportive of the movie.

However after the huge success of The Sixth Sense the year before the $249.1 million for Unbreakable was a little disappointing.

- The Happening - $163.4 million

The end of the noughties was a tough time for Shyamalan as a string of movies struggled critically and commercially.

The Happening was just one of them as it was met with a wave of negativity when it was released in 2008.

Mark Wahlberg starred in the central role as a man who tries to protect his family from a natural disaster. If you were exposed to a certain neurotoxin it caused you to commit suicide.

Sadly the movie was mauled by the critics when it was released and the likes of Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel on the cast list were not enough to save it.

- Lady in the Water - $72.7 million

But it is Lady in the Water, which was released back in 2006, that is the movie that has performed the most poorly for Shyamalan at the box office.

Starring Paul Giamatti and Bryce Dallas Howard the film follows a maintenance man who discovers a water nymph. The nymph cannot return to her world because she is being hunted by a mysterious creature.

The film was made for $70 million and yet made just $72.7 million by the end of it's theatrical run.

The movie not only struggled at the box office but it was also met with unfavourable reviews from the critics.

After Earth is out 7th June.
