Al Pacino's new Broadway production of Shakespeare's The Merchant Of Venice is already earning $1 million (666,670) a week in box office takings.

The Oscar winner kicked off the New York revival of the classic play at the Broadhurst Theatre last week (19Oct10), and the money is already rolling in after just seven preview performances - with thousands snapping up tickets costing up to $140 (GBP93) each.

The production notched up first week takings of $1,060,015 (GBP706,680), unprecedented figures for a non-musical, reports Daily Variety.

It's not the first time Pacino has played Shakespeare's Shylock in New York - he headlined a successful open air run in Central Park last summer (10).

And the actor will be back on the big screen in the new year with his latest movie The Son of No One, which also stars Channing Tatum.
