America Ferrera is to star in and executive produce 'American Tragic'.
The 'Ugly Betty' actress will feature in the film opposite newcomer Ryan O'Nan, who plays a young war veteran who goes on a cross-country trip as he struggles to find redemption. America will play his wife while Melissa Leo is to star as the soldier's mother.
Ryan Piers Williams, who penned the script, will direct the movie, while Maya Entertainment - a Latino mini-studio - will produce and distribute it.
The 'Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants' star has previously acted as executive producer on Spanish-language films 'Muertas' and 'Towards Darkness' but 'American Tragic' is the first English-language movie she has worked behind-the-scenes on.
Filming is scheduled to begin in New Mexico next February with a scheduled release date of autumn 2009.
