Angels & Demons has ended Star Trek's one week reign at the top of the UK box office by swooping in and taking the number one spot.

The film, which grossed over £6 million, is the second Dan Brown novel to make it to the big screen and sees Tom Hanks reprise the role of Robert Langdon.

When Langdon discovers evidence of the resurgence of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati - the most powerful underground organization in history - he also faces a deadly threat to the existence of the secret organization's most despised enemy: the Catholic Church.

Star Trek still put in a good performance in it's second week of release grossing over £3.4 million and Coraline dropped one place to round off the top three.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Hannah Montana both dropped three places to four and five but all the movies in the top five broke through the £1 million barrier.

Fighting was the only other new movie to make it into the top ten opening at number six.
