Avengers Assemble has stormed to the top of the UK box office as it took a whopping £15.7 million in the opening weekend.

It has become the biggest opening superhero of all time in the UK as it surpassed the £11.19 million set by The Dark Knight back in 2008.

The film took over £2.5 million on opening (Thursday) as fans flocked to sees the Marvel heroes united on screen for the first time.

Avengers Assemble, which stars Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett is the only new entry inside the top ten this week.

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen stayed put at number two while there was also no move for The Hunger Games at number three.

The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists was up two this weekend from number six to number four, this movie also did well at the American box office this weekend.

The Cabin In The Woods dropped just a single place as it rounded off the top five.

This week's biggest faller was the action packed Battleship as it dropped five places from number one to number six after two weeks in the top spot.

Mirror Mirror was down one place this week at seven while Titanic 3D fell three places to number eight.

21 Jump Street stayed put at nine while Lockout dropped three places to this week's number ten.
