'The Messenger' actor Ben Foster has been cast as John Gotti Jr. in forthcoming crime drama movie 'Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father'.

Ben Foster has been cast as John Gotti Jr. in forthcoming 'Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father'.

The 'Messenger' star will play John Travolta's son in the forthcoming biopic about the life of the criminal family, which also stars Al Pacino, Kelly Preston and Lindsay Lohan, and Ben confessed he was "deeply honoured" to get the chance to take part in the movie.

I have a career because of him. I am deeply honoured for the opportunity to work with Barry and the amazing cast he is assembling to help bring the story of the Gotti family to the screen.

He said in a statement: "Barry Levinson was the first director who took a chance on me.

"I have a career because of him. I am deeply honoured for the opportunity to work with Barry and the amazing cast he is assembling to help bring the story of the Gotti family to the screen."

The movie is expected to be the first of a trilogy about the family.

It will follow the life of 'Dapper Don' John Gotti, the boss of New York's criminal Gambino family.

John Gotti Jr. is serving as a consultant on the project, which is currently being re-written by Barry Levinson.

The film is due to begin production in early 2012.
