Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed that he is excited to work with motion capture for The Hobbit.

The Sherlock Holmes actor is set to play Smaug in Peter Jackson’s adaptation of the J.R.R Tolkein novel, which will be split into two movies.

Speaking to Empire the actor said: "I’m always keen to use my body in my work, so I’m looking forward to the motion capture for Smaug.

"Both Gollum and King Kong were primates, whereas I’m playing a serpent, so it’ll be interesting - I’ll have to tie my legs together, possibly, or else they’ll be kind of splayed out to the side as a reptile’s should be."

Cumberbatch joins a cast of Martin Freeman, James Nesbitt, Ian McKellan and Andy Serkis and filming is already underway in New Zealand.

But he will be returning to the big screen in September as he joins an all star British cast in tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, a big screen adaptation of the John Le Carre novel.

He will also be retuning to the small screen for a new series of Sherlock Holmes
