Brandon Routh wants to fight Brainiac in the next 'Superman' film.

The star - who played the titular superhero in 2006's 'Superman Returns' - suggested writers are already considering pitting him against the evil mastermind when he reprises the role.

He said: "I think there are a lot of interesting things you could do with Brainiac.

"He's been given a lot of power and a lot of different abilities over the years in the comics. I know that DC is working on a Brainiac storyline that they are excited about."

The actor - who plays a gay porn star in the upcoming 'Zach and Miri Make a Porno' - also said he would prefer if the 'Superman' franchise did not follow in the footsteps of 'Batman' by going "dark".

He added: "I don't think the character necessarily has to be darker. I don't think Superman should ever be dark and brooding, that's not his nature."
