Carey Mulligan has revealed that she too a year away from making movies because she was unhappy with the movies and roles that were being offered to her.

The actress shot to everyone's attention with An Education, a role for which she was Oscar nominated, but struggled to find something that was different to what she had done before.

She returned to the big screen at the beginning of the year with Never Let Me Go and she is back this week with Drive, a movie that sees her team up with Ryan Gosling and director Nicolas Winding Refn.

Speaking to The Press Association the actress said: "As much I wanted to I just couldn't find something that I felt justified in doing.

"There was just too much that was similar to the parts I'd played before and things I had already done.

"I felt that until I found something that I felt excited about in terms of something different, I was going to wait."

Shame is another project in the pipeline for the actress as she stars alongside Michael Fassbender. There has been a lot of early support for the film on the festival circuit - and some Oscar whispers.

Drive is released 23rd September.
